I can't offer a mechanic in the Lake District but after trying quite a few garages in the Lancashire area over 18 years of ownership, I've found a decent one in Chorley.
It'll be about 90 minutes from your area but at least you'll know it's with someone who knows their trade.
Weldbank Garage, Chorley. It's a Bosch specialist place too…. ask for Tony.

Also can't help I'm afraid, but welcome to the club.
I've shifted your post to 'chat' as hopefully more people will see it

I'll certainly give Tony a try.
Do either of you know where is best to get a car cover for the mk1 cabriolet?

Car covers - that is a minefield question! You'll find a ton of posts pro and anti car covers - expensive vs cheap. For what it's worth, my tintop will be moving out of the garage (to make way for an MGB) and I'm just going to get a Halfords cover, supposed to fit ok, and about £50. I've read stories of folk paying £150 plus for custom fit covers that don't actually fit that well. Personally I;d get a carcoon, but the Mrs won't have it!

You're lucky, my Mrs would quite happily have me kip outside in a carcoon.paceman said

Brought my current one from classic additions a year ago and now to has been great.
Cost about £200 I think but very much worth it in comparison with the others.
Obviously something that protected to car without actually touching it is better such as a carcoon or a garage but it’s all about what can be don’t practically.
