Then come the gotcha - MOT 2 weeks out of date. Oops. May as well get oil changed at the same time. Also have a look at clutch. Does not feel right.
Crank shaft seal and /or input shaft seal. Lucky me. Expensive MOT for me. Grrrr

What did you do to your Mk1 Golf Today ?
I’d got one missing and the other not brilliant.
So…
Got some 6 mm ply
Measured the internal diameter of the original pod compared it to the outside diameter of the grille.
Then set the wood cutting tool to match.
Then cut out the hole.
I put a makeshift arbor through the disc I cut out. Put it in the drill and with some sand paper refined the diameter and chamfered the upper edge.
I’d got new speakers and the grille material so placed this over the disc and trimmed it down a bit
Next I aligned the disc and hole with grille material between them.
I pressed my foot down to force the disc into the hole.
I placed a metal ditch on top stamped down then put the lot over an old wheel and nocked it out through the other side using a few blows of the hammer.
Once through I rolled the mesh on its side to bring it into better shape.
Then took grinder and flap wheel and levelled the mesh flush with the disc.
Little fettling to get them to sit in the pod then applied a bead of PU adhesive to hold them in place.

Even though I’m busy I took the time out today to make some speaker grilles for the late cabby pods.

That looks absolutely AWESOME mate, where can I get speaker pods like that and does it go in place of the old 4x6 pods or how do they work? I’m trying to find the best solution for upgrading my front speakers as well but without luck

Early ones pre 1990 are 6x4.
Post 1990 are deeper map pocket and bigger pod at the front taking 13 Cm speakers.
The issue is also the door cards are cut differently.
You’d need to enlarge the hole to get the later speakers in.
You could get a later door card set up but then you’d need to check whether it’s out of power windows set up. These don’t have a hole for the window winder spline to go through.
Or you could just get some blanks and re do them to what you’d like.
MK2 tin top pods are similar so it’s a case of trial and error.
A look round the scrappers at different cars could give you some ideas.
I’d take some measurements of what you’ve got. And remember most modern cars are moulded plastic door pods won’t detach.
Bear in mind what space you have in the footwell area as Hugh pods might get in the way.
So I’d be looking at other VW models similar era. Passat, MK 2 Golf.

I have these, do you know if mk2 speaker pods will fit? Would be ideal to be able to fit 13cm speakers

So it’s door cards off.
Offer up what pods you get mark it what needs cutting screw on and off you go
Not sure on mk2 sizes though just do a bit of research on google.
Those door cards with matching colour code pods look too nice to chop about though.
You can get plastic paint so take your old pods to paint suppliers and colour match. Refinish the new parts before fixing.

Thanks a lot for the advise, its very much valued! I’ll figure out my options and go from there. Easy choice is uprated 4x6 I just struggle to find a set with decent sound so thought I’d go bigger.
Deffo easy choice is stick to what you’ve got.
There’s plenty of good ones to choose from.

Mine has infinity ones fitted they are a bit old and worn now but still sound sensible
My last cab i made a custom shelf and added 6x9 and 2 small subs on the shelf, a small alpine amp and it sounded really good top up or down

Generally these tend to be summer cars and once the roofs down it covers the parcel shelf, so defeats the object muffling the sound.
If it’s a yearly drive then you’re gonna be roof up most of the time I can see a benefit.
I agree the Alpine ones are pretty good and a search can get them at a reasonable price.

I can live with it for now, need to find a grey shelf
I used my last good shelf as a template and made a copy in thick mdf and mounted the speakers under it
Recovered it in black cloth and it looked perfect
The sound even with the hood down was very good, especially if you wind the seat back stoppers out a wee bit let's the noise travel and you still get nice bass
I'm probably going to make a similar shelf for this one and recover it in some tartan Mk1 seat cloth just to be different kind of OE

Corners rotted away.
Could do with a paper template if anyone has one knocking about.
Speaker wise I’ve got the Phoenix gold front speakers and the tears I think are pioneer in the Rivage.
This is going to be fun lol

Oddly you should say that I’m just embarking on a parcel shelf but I’ve discovered most of its not here.

Mission accomplished lol.

This had rust stains on the carpet bit too.
Lemon juice and salt mixed in little water. Apply and leave for a while.
I left it an hour.
Then washed it down with washing up liquid and soap powder.
Got the nail brush on it.
Rinsed away.
It’s got rid of most of it.
