could you not ask them to try and turn the engine over by hand (19mm socket and wrench on the crank nut is all that's needed)
Might change the value of the car….
Let us know how you get on as love to see more.

From what I can make out from the pictures but it could be dirt not rust… rear arch crusty, bottoms of A pillars, front scuttle panel, front edge and rear edge of bonnet, not seen underneath so might need work underneath and expensive if around the rear beam, will need new brakes, probably brake lines, possibly fuel tank, fuel lines, all the rubber hoses etc, not sure if the engine runs..
I guess any where between £500 - £1000?
I'm sure someone else might have another idea on price…

You should be able to register the car as an historic vehicle then no road tax or MOT needed but I would take it for an MOT check to make sure it's all ok when you are ready to drive it.
You need to take the log book to a post office and get a MOT exempt form filled in then you can tax it for the road.
Just done this for my 1978 Mk1 Scirocco.

Good deal if the slightly earlier small bumper and manual box '78 sold at Buxton recently is any guide,satans_creation said
I parted with £1400 for it, which was the asking price £200 for the transport.
This freebie scared the life out of me

Wow what a beauty
What a price 😲😲😲
Mines not as good and mileage is 27k. No service history but there isn't much reason to doubt it but I'm no expert and not 100% what to look for.
I just see a car I love and buy it….
