Busy sorting out my mini last weekend. I recently bought a cooper s for the school commute, its first generation with 50k on the clock. I wasn't sure about a sound I could hear so wanted to give it a good inspection, changed the supercharger oil, water pump and pulleys / drive belt.
Boy this is a tight engine to work on. Nice its a modular design though Radiator comes off in one panel:
Bumper off, impact bar and supercharger
This is what i was left with No problems with the supercharger, oil was nice and clear when removed and had plenty in there, changed it anyway.
The idler pulley and tensioner were ok and water pump. Had new ones to go in.
In the end found the culprit, it was the power steering pump fan.
The bearing in the spal fan was super stiff. No wonder it sounded like a cement mixer ha ha
Its in a position under the engine which gets filthy Used one off ebay and bobs your uncle no more sound.

The front and back engine mounts were a bit tricky to align, the engine was up and down like a yo yo as discovered the bolts used for the transmission mount couldn't position with the side mounts in place. All sorted and aligned now I had the end plate off the gearbox to tighten the 5th gear bolts and selector. I had swapped over the 5th gear from a CTN diesel box. Then fitted the refurbished plate with a new seal and bolts.
Attached the driveshafts and steering column Good days work

Decided to move house so spent several weekends doing up and clearing out the clutter in the house.
The poor garage has taken the brunt and slowly filling up :O
I have a property in mind which unfortunately doesn't have a double garage but has massive potential to create a custom one , maybe a build a garage build lol
So the Golf is on hold for a while, I will try to sneak in some updates in the next few weeks. I can fit the exhaust and shifter which will mean less things to transport to new place
