The gauge needle still works and the light isn't needed really, if it works then leave well alone, but mine had an issue with this light. As long as the fan comes on when the needle gets 3/4 of the way your fine

Clean the contacts on the blue mylar ribbon where they go into the multi plug. Wrap a couple of turns of electrical tape around the stub it fits over, this then pads the contact out so once there back in place the contact is much firmer and better.
The flashing light is for low coolant level too on certain models.

im use to driving beach buggys and my V8 ford anglia which is gone now. i am building another buggy though, older cars just dont have that sort of technology - but i am use to this.
all you need is the gauge in my opinion, if it goes past 3/4 of the way, this means your fan has not come on and then ya in trouble, thats all you need to remember

Steam coming from under the bonnet will also achieve the same result.

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

its ok as long as your gauge stays inside the normal zone - which for people who have original handbooks will say in there.

the level sensor terminals can get dirty so buff em, the wiring can corrode and relays can rust out. one common problem is the seals go on level sensor pins and coolant wicks up the wires to the relay. I see this on around 90% of the mk1 looms i have in to upgrade
The OP advice is good if all other troubleshooting avenues fail and issue is down to faulty clocks

but the light still flashed.
the temp sensor is new and works fine.
earths are good so i have a small issue with my clocks but i did manage to repair my mpg digital read out, the 3 pins that plug into the back of the clocks had broken off, i stuck these back with a tiny bit of super glue and hey presto!!!!!!
its all good - love the car
