I was lucky enough to buy my Mk1 already stanced pretty nicely.
But have a look at this site: Tyrestretch.com
They have pictures on there of different fits of tyres on different sized rims so you get an idea of what look you will get.
Also, would suggest finding out if you do have coilies and if you do get them set to a height that you're happy with
Hope that helps!

When you say you want a nice 'stance' what do you mean?
What you like is what you like. A nice stance to you will be different to another persons view.
Piccy of my golf for you. it's on 15's with 195/45's on the front and 195/50's on the back. The wheels are ET 30 and 6.5" wide. She's wound down on coils and sits about the height of a tennis ball above the ground.
Front wheel
Back wheel.
Dunno if you'd call it stanced or not though!

Mind you it's just me, the missus and the dog in the car.
If you want the wheel flush then spacers will be your friend. Just remember to get longer bolts.
What size tyres are you currently running? Are you intending to change the wheels or stick with the same ones?

jazman , Yeah I'd have to agree. It's always a matter of preference so just go with what you think looks best.
By the way, does anyone know if we're allowed any amount of 'poke' in the UK? i.e. when the tyres sit outside the arches or the rims poke out of the tyres when they're stretched, it can look good if done right
Didn't think it was legal but just wanna double check.

Cheers mate, it needs the back further out so I'll be changing the tyres sooner or later and adding a couple of thin spacers probably too. Although there are some Crager wheels in the house that keep whispering to me……….
'Legal' poke is always a tricky one. I've seem some stuff that looks dangerous and so the police keep pulling the owners and then they get all 'huh why's he picking on me all the time' but then I run a bit of poke on the Derby and never had an issue. But it is only a bit. Like the stretch is only a bit.
I don't think there is a 'legal limit' for poke. If it's subtle and looks 'acceptable' you probably won't get hassle. If it's extreme and looks very obvious (and is combined with something else like big camber) then the police will probably become very good friends with you!
Piccy of the Derby with poke and stretched tyres. But so subtle I've never had any problems.

If you're running stretched tyres then you can have a fair amount of poke whilst not having visible tread. That said it's a very grey area and is an officer of the law want's to be difficult there's a number of construction and use regulations they can quote.
Like with most things, if your running slight poke and stretch you'll probably be fine. Run et0 9j rims with 165 tyres stretched on and you're asking for trouble.
