If you make a mistake fitting the rocker cover gasket you just get oil running out.
What car is it you have? I hope its a carb as that's the one with water in the inlet manifold, injection there is no water in the inlet manifold…

Check to hoses and jubilee clips going into the manifold for leaks if there fine there is a gasket and grommit between the manifold and the head, I think the carb version has water coming in from the head to the manifold. You will need to take the inlet manifold off to replace it.
Flush and change your coolant, it should not be brown!
Gasket looks like this, I think the top hoop has the water coming through, is that where yours is leaking, between cyinder 3 and 4?

Any suggestions of the order i should test or just starting changing things?
Manifold gasket and plug?
I have a small hole in exhaust manifolds end so do this as well
Change Oil to see if it still turns milky
Flush coolant
wait for results?? Before considering head gasket
Cheers for all the comments
Then test again

Hi,
I'm not quite sure what you mean but it could well be the headgasket if the oil is milky and you've got a water leak.
The first thing to do though is to clean it all up and get a new gasket and oil ring on the inlet manifold.
This is a quick job, except for removing the manifold bolts which are quite hard to locate. You need a hex key (6mm?) on a long narrow extension and a mirror to see what you're doing.
I did this a couple of years ago, and sandblasted the inlet and exhaust manifolds at the same time, and now in all looks a lot cleaner, even two years on.
You also need to flush and replace the coolant, which should be transparent.

This is the number I can make out on the hose 026121062B Anyone think this is NOT the correct part from VW heritage ? Reminder I've got a standard 1.8 Clipper carb with origional Carb.

After the hose is replaced it looks like it's time to:
flush coolant
change oil
go for a 30 mile drive and see how the oil and coolant are

You could always try phoning a VW dealer, as you have a part number they should be able to look it up and see if its still avaible and there prices are sometimes cheaper than vw heritage.

Anyone ever seen this? The original carb seems to rock on top of its mount only really kept down by the air box..does not explain the smoke at start up only but all things maybe worth mentioning.

a little white smoke on initial start up is fine - it's just the remaining coolant burning off - but it shouldn't smoke next time you re-start, or else you still have a leak somewhere.
Whenever I do overhauls, there's always smoke from engine degreaser, new paint, oil on exhaust, etc, but never for more than a minute or so.
The carb shouldn't rock on its mounting. It should be possible to move it slightly, but if there's a lot of movement the rubber will be perished and need replacing. It's a quick job and cheap too.

Thinking of getting a pressure test done if this will help the diagnosis.
I've started a different thread on the same topic now.. so maybe best I try and kill off this thread as it's about the same issue to be honest.
Cheers
