Joined the forum to help my 14 year old son who has been given a MK1 GTI 1600 by his uncle it has a full service history, 2 owners from new and is not too far gone, so a mild restoration is on the cards. The car has stood for 6 years and was partly dismantled for a repaint which never happned. We have the engine running really nicley and most parts are present except for the driver seat - mars red and drivers door card. Anyone out there have one for sale/donation . I cannot post in the wanted section yet as I have to have made more post or something.
I really want him to get into the car to keep him off lazing around the streets or worse gaming in his room. his face when we finally got it started was worth it all.
Thanks for any help

Check the classified section as I thought I had seen some red stripe seats for sale?
Will you be driving it for your son until he's 17?

As for driving it, well I remember my mates mums MK1 1800 which was fast from the passenger seat , so I will be tempted. My mate ended up lodging that car into a tree about 15 feet up and escaped relatively unscathed. However I don't think Harry will be driving it as the insurance will be far too much unless things change in the next 2 and a half years
All in all the car is complete in Mars Red, it will need some rear cill and arches work , plus some inner front arch repairs and possibly valence lowers too, the real pity is a crappy glass tilt roof so we will ponder a new skin, or perhaps a period fold back Webasto roof professioanlly fitted if the funds allow.
this is Harrys little project so I am leaving it up to him, but will advise on on the tasteful mods for reliability and cheap performance upgrades.

Take a look here - http://vwgolfmk1.org.uk/forum/index.php?page=topicview&id=modifications-and_2%2Fhow-i-got-rid-of-my
Nige (Chudd) replaced his sunroof with a Fiat 500 Webasto as you'll see in the link. A leap of faith I guess cutting the hole but a good job and I remember sitting in the back of it one year at the AGM (2006 I think?) when it was peeing down and it was bone dry in the car.
Not a bad option if you want to lose the glass roof
