As far as I know you dont need special insurance.
I've (heard) the motorways in Belgium are bad for potholes.
Its best to go on the tunnel apparently and drive through, and book it asap as it will be cheaper, you can use tesco points for it if you have any!
I'm also going to Belgium and driving to Wolfsburg after the show, so as to kill two birds whilst im over there.

If you're driving through France then you'll need spare bulbs, breathalyser, warning triangle, first aid and the kitchen sink in the car or you'll get fined if you're unlucky enough to get stopped.

Went on it many years ago and it was brilliant. It's an overnight ferry. Used to leave Hull about 5pm and you arrive by breakfast time.
Sounds interesting, get some shut eye and be fresh for the rest of the journey. Gonna Look into it 8O

But the main problem compared to southern routes is that it can cost £300+.

I've been on the ferry to Rotterdam and it was really good; looks a bit dear but saves trip to Dover and gets you in the right place for access to Germany. You're also travelling while you'd have been asleep anyway! I recall that you can get on it well before departure and eat/drink/get good night's sleep.
Best to get breakdown and recovery cover - a lot of classic policies include it - and check total cover for repair/repatriation and its relationship to some insurance company's idea of the "market value".
You might also need a hi-vis gilet; I know you do in France.
Ginner's a mine of info on Wolfsburg trips after last year; I had a chat about it at the NEC show and the club trip looked brilliant.

Sheffield to Hanover (according to google maps) is 680 miles. You'll average about 35mpg depending on how good you are on the autobahns.
19.43 gallons in fuel to get there, and the same back.
38.85 gallons at roughly £6.50/€8.50 per gallon is £250 in fuel.

EDIT: that assumes you leave england at dover, which you won't - assuming you're not mental.
