I've also done a trip from the Alps to the West coast of France and back over ten days, involving loads of driving, no problems apart from the odd refusing to start when the Golf was warm (hoping the fuel pump replacement this week will fix that problem). Also did a trip over Europe's highest road down to Nice and back the next day - loads of driving in hot weather and no problems.
I think I've been lucky, to be completely honest (the current Golf is a lemon).
Snowbombing has a good rep for a party and they do beachbombing (or used to) in summertime. Enjoy! Don't forget to check what you're meant to have in your car for the drive (eg, in France you need a reflective vest and triangle), and check that your insurance covers you while you're on the continent.

First one was a Rivage. Current one is a Quartet, so both 1.8 GTi cabbies. Great for summertime road trips.

I was in France in June and fuel price was about the same as here and in Austria in July I think it was a bit higher, 10%, something llike that, won't make much difference.
Go for it - you'll have a great time.
