'83 Lhasa & '91 Sportline Newbie saying hello!
Thought I'd say hello properly. Been lurking on here for a while, but not posted much ops: . I'm a long standing Mk1 fan, and bought my Lhasa tintop back in 1993 and restored it over the winter of 1998/99. It was a regular show car through to 2002, when I took it apart for Phase 2 on the project, but never got round to it. I still have it, albeit in boxes!
Some pics:
In 2002, before being stripped:
How it looks now!
Sadly it will look like this for a while yet, as other things mean I won't be rebuilding it until 2011 :dontknow: Still it's tucked away in safe storage and will be reborn!
Had some nice cars in the interim, but you know Mk1s, once they get under your skin…
So started looking for Convertibles - always loved them, and thought it was about time I tried one. A few weeks ago I bought this one:
It's a 1991, J Plate Sportline with only 65k on the clock and 4 previous keepers. It's been loved and cherished all of its life and is great original condition. Little things like the original supplying dealer number plates, all the factory stickers on the glass & body, original Quantum alarm, even original hood and windscreen! Bar one small patch, the paint is all factory as well.
The car has had a few mods done - sits on Koni suspension, Milltek stainless exhaust and manifold. It also has a grille spoiler and a Wolfsburg sticker in the rear screen - both of which have been removed!
Before I even got it home I dropped the car off to a good friend who runs a well known VW bodyshop. He mopped the paint to get it as good as possible. I also got him to paint the wing mirrors which were starting to fade.
A few days later I picked the car up looking seriously shiny! As I said, the car still had its factory vinyl roof, but it was starting to crack and in the recent rain had started to leak. I wasn't sure whether to replace it, as it was the original VW item, and the car is garaged and very much a fair weather car now. But in the end I decided to replace it. After reading up on here and other sites I decided on Car Hood Warehouse, in Chessington, who fitted a new black Mohair roof. They did a superb job! Really chuffed.
It's great to be a Mk1 again - just superb cars!

The MK2 is drop-dead-gorgeous
Cheers Fella, and a total testiment to VW quality. It's been flawless in all the time we've had it. Seriously, what more could you want from a car?? Such a complete package. An absolute pleasure.

Look out for a well loved example so you don't inherit a load of bills and you can't go wrong. Some good cars pop up on Pistonheads and the like.

The wheels are 15" RS047, redished to make them 8" wide. The whole wheel were polished finish, including the centre lattice. Currently in my loft, so God knows how they look now
The seats were Recaros - but not from another car, but ordered directly from Recaro. They had electric adjustment for height and backrest tilt, as well as seat heating. Nice seats, but OTT for a Mk1, IMO. I sold them shortly after that pic was taken. The original seats will go back in it and are absolutely mint condition. The car will be much closer to factory appearance when it's rebuilt. Just low and G60'd
