Been doing bits and bobs on the car over the last few weeks, mostly staring at it wondering where to start next!!  I tried to sort the hydraulic clutch out so tried to bleed it, with the help of Crezz but we couldn't do it, the fluid was coming through with no bubbles but the pedal just wouldn't go hard.

I went to the local scrappy and spent an hour or two removing another master cylinder off a Mk3 Golf estate, and fitted it last weekend, i also got a new slave cylinder and fitted that during the week.  Before i've had chance to try and bleed it again i found £200 in my bedside draw  :$            :o    so i thought i'd spend it before the Mrs found out about it and have spent the last couple of nights removing the pedal box and have ordered a HRP hydraulic clutch and brake bias box.

Couple pictures of the mess i've made!  Is the brake linkage usually held on with sealant as well as the bolts? lol  :P

One removed pedal box:

Will sort the wiring out once everything is back in and sorted, although the car does run, somehow!!

And the engine bay, i have now moved the main engine connector back to the standard position and will start tidying some of the wiring and my coolant pipe mod.  Plus remove some of the sealant that was sprayed over!

Finding £200, nice! How could you forget that?

Hope your missus didn't put it there as a test!

Nice way to invest it though mate.

Must have stashed it there on my birthday back in November and totally forgot about it, a great suprise     I hope that's where it came from, if it was a trick by the wife i've fallen for it hook, line and sinker!!!  :o

Pedal box has been sent off and will post pictures of it when it returns.  There's so much more room in the engine bay now, although there was quite a lot behind the VR6 anyway.

Been quite busy recently ordering stuff.

Today i got the HRP bias brake pedal box back ready for the hydraulic clutch as well.  It looks such a good bit of kit and couldn't wait to offer it up to the car to make sure i'd be able to fit integral master cvylinders under the dash etc.

I went to test fit it and my car has bitten back  :P   Nothing to do with HRP, but as the car has been converted to run the CE2 wiring the fusebox has been moved to the drivers side, the previous owner has welded in the brackets to hold the fusebox which get right in the way of the pedal box.

I've decided to move the fusebox to the original passenger side, i know the work involved  O_o  but i can then remove the bracket and get the pedal box fitted.  I was searching the evil Ebay for looms to use to lengthen mine.  I then remembered a box marked ABF looms which i stripped from a MK3 Golf when i did my ABF conversion on the last Mk1.

There in the box are the ignition loom and the dash clocks looms as god intended them.  I must of known when i removed them painstakingly from the donor car without cutting anything

I've got a pile of other wires etc there so should be able to lengthen any other looms hopefully with the correct wire colour.  I'm thinking of putting PVC conduit round the loom instead of wrapping it, is there any problems using stuff like pictured below?

Also found some drawings of the 02A rear gearbox mount as the car didn't come with one.  Manged to transfer the drawing onto paper and made a template, which i then made properly:

in cardboard         Not sure it would hold the weight of a VR6 (don't start that argument  :| )

Got a phone call this morning to say that they have tacked the mount together, so it's ready to pick it up and test fit it.  They'll then weld it properly if it all lines up ok!

Man that's a good template, top marks on that one!! Nice find in the bedside drawer too

The cardboard was even the right thickness  :$

Nice find. Just shows it pays to remove stuff slowly and correctly.

It seems like I haven't done much on the car recently, I've been looking after the little one and other things going on recently, but listing them out actually makes me think I've done more than I thought!

I've had a go at lengthening the dash clocks loom, then main ignition loom and a couple of others too.

I got hold of a BCA carbon filter relatively cheap so I'll now have to put the washer bottle somewhere else.  Will probably upgrade the boot pump and run both front and back from there.

I have also managed to get the HRP pedal box fitted and also plumbed in the hydraulic clutch this week.  I routed the hydraulic line through behind the dash, the speedo grommet worked a treat repositioned and then out through one of the bracket holes for the old brake servo which is no longer.  The throttle pedal sits a bit high now, but I'll deal with that at a later date.

With a bit of help last Sunday from Crezz we managed to fit the Scirocco 16V handbrake cables so I now have some sort of brakes!  I wanted to try and get the car up on ramps to check the front underneath, it was interesting trying to drive the car up onto the ramps with no brakes!!

Then tonight I've had another go at the steering column as it wobbles about like something out of Wacky Races.  The column has the large spline adapter on it so to take the ignition housing off and sort the bearing I needed to get the spline adapter off, what a job.  I tried this a few weeks ago and gave up, so tonight I took a hammer to it, but that didn't work.  So I tried the mole grips trick with a puller and it the adapter eventually came off.

After reading about it seems I'm missing the plastic sleeve on the shaft that seats in within the bearing, 've ordered the bearing already so I guess I'll have to order the sleeve as well now.

Went to the stealers this morning and picked up my parts that i ordered:

Removed the old bearing/guide:

Started to fit the plastic bearing ring/guide and then the plastic sleeve over the column.

Then i found out that the Mk3 ignition barrel has a narrower bearing diameter than the Mk1 so it wouldn't fit over the sleeve!!!  :P     :P

So i had to remove it, ended up with a mangled plastic mess, but luckily i had ordered the Mk3 ring/guide and this worked a treat, so i now have no play in the steering column whatsoever and can now fit my Momo steering wheel.

Also managed to drive the car up onto the car ramps and can now have a look under the car.  Haven't done it yet as i am scared of the results and was dressed to go out for a BBQ.  Will try and have a look tomorrow then see what needs doing  :$

Been a while since i last updated.  Nothing has changed on the car at all  :(

Had a look underneath and there's loads of rust and the passenger side floor pan has been jacked and up and crumpled with it splitting where the floor pan meets the sills.  The rear axle mountings are cack and the drivers side is only attached by one of the bolts!!!

After a few weeks of doom and gloom and trying to work out in my mind the best way to go forward i have decided to move onwards and upwards, well try at least

Until last year i'd never changed a spark plug, well next year i will be learning to weld!  Bought myself this as it was local after a load of reading through forums on what was best to get.

Then last weekend i had a good clearout of rubbish and tried to fit bits from the car in the roof space, didn't happen so it now inside the car for the time being.  Had a little helper as well.

Today i managed to jack the front up so i could take the drivers arch off fearing the worst  O_o  and found the following:

So that side isn't too bad at all, well i don't think it is from pictures i've seen of other people's projects.  You can maybe just see the mount from the VR6 in the arch.  The main problem with the car is the underneath.  So i'm going to learn how to weld on some scrap metal and also make a jig so by the time i come to attacking the car i hopefully will have a better idea of what end to use of the welder

A little one is due in December just before Christmas so this is going to be a long term project, but i'm quite looking forward to doing it now, ask again in 4 years time!!

brave man taking on some welding.

Please store that dash in a more suitable fashion, they are super soft and don't take much to damage.

How you getting on with this mate? Did the 6pk1105 belt fit once the power steering pump was removed? And have you found a rad yet?

Haven't found a radiator yet, i've searched to the ends of the internet and back trying to find one that will fit under the slam panel.  No luck yet but i'll keep looking, let me know if you find anything.

The 6pk1105 belt fits great with the power steering pulley removed.

How you getting on with yours?

Bit of an update since the last post!

Been a bit tied up for the last 7 months as we had another boy in December, so had no time for the car. Amazing what 2 under 2 year olds can do to your life!

However we decided to put the house on the market in January with a 6 week old baby, and somehow moved in March (we don't hang about!!) The wife wanted to move to a certain area nearby and i wanted a garage. We are very lucky to now live here, totally over stretched financially, but i managed to keep onto the Mk1

The car got trailed to the new house and has sat in the garage ever since. I even started to think about selling it about 6 weeks ago with adverts on a few forums, but i decided against it as i hate watching TV in the evenings and i can't do anything in the house whilst the boys sleep.

This is now my new playground, i'm very lucky, excuse the mess, i'm still tidying from the initial "dump everything in the garage" when we moved in! This is how it stands this evening, but i've made a start on emptying the car of all the spares and removing the interior trim and wiring.

Notice the girder down the middle of the garage roof, perfect for extracting the VR6 from the bay, if it holds the weight!!!

Storage

I've decided to strip it and start from the beginning as after looking at the bodywork and underneath, it seems to have more and more rust each time i look at it. I've started making a rollover out of wood, as i still haven't used the welder i bought last year  :$  Need some more plywood for the 1/4 circle parts to beef it up, but i have bought some box section and sheet metal to make the mounts to bolt to the wooden jig, so i will be practicing on an old sofa recliner frame i saved from the skip at work.

Hopefully looking at it i can practice all sorts of joints like plug welds, butt joints etc on the old frame before i try on the mounts for the jig. Never having welded means i need to learn fast as the car's going to need some i reckon!

Old recliner frame with mechanisms removed. Might be able to use a few of these and make a workbench frame as well once i get a better understanding of welding.
