After two cabby's 2009-2015 i finally bit the bullet as wanted to try tin top ownership :-)

Hey Guys & Girls

As some that know me will know, after having my clipper cabby from 2009-2012 and my Sportline from 2012-2015, I finally decided now was the time to try tin top ownership :-)

I will definitely miss the Sportline , and would have kept it if I had the money and space for two, but its gone to a great new owner, and I have first refusal if he sells in future, so I hope by then I might have the space and be able to have both and buy it back, but less on that, and more onto my new toy !

Its not gona "float everyones boat" its running 17's !! but personally I think they work well and the stance looks good, and its stripped out and has had loads of smoothing work done, in places you will only notice when parked next to another, doors, scuttle, slam panel etc etc

Its has a 2.0 16v Seat tall block running twin 45 webbers producing around 170bhp (according to previous owner)

It has been stripped and rebuilt. The head was skimmed and totally rebuilt, new everything, block re faced and pistons cleaned. All new vw gaskets. new oil cooler, new radiators, fan, switch, mount, shallower sump.  Engine was cleaned and painted crackle black, alternator and oil cooler polished, rocker cover enamelled in gold, new plugs, leads, distributor, belts, etc.

The engine has the best parts where possible, so it is running twin 45 webber carbs with mangoletsi weber linkage mted to a dibbles intake manifold,  supersprint exhaust manifold, top fill vw golf radiator.

Its been stripped to a bare shell and repainted in Estorial Blue which I have not seen on another Mk1 before, for those old skool long term forummembers look up X5PEA and you will see the car in the past, its been re painted since then, and its been painted on a spit so everything is blue.

One of composite bumpers in black gel coat with new end caps.

All the window, door and boot rubbers are new and has a non heated clear glass rear window which I think is quite dare I say it …. rare

Engine bay has been totally stripped and smooth, chassis legs plated, scuttle removed , holes removed etc, under the arches have all been smoothed as well.

Its has loads of new parts as been rebuilt from a shell including - fuel tank, filler neck, all fittings, fuel pump, filter, all fuel lines, all brake lines, hand brake cables, steering rack, bushes, engine bushes, trim, fuel cp, bumpers, mounts, end caps, bonnet catch and clip, exhaust, radiator, door handles, locks, grill, wiring, number plate lights, the list goes on and on
Suspension, new fk coil overs, new top mounts, wishbones, track rods, ball joints, cv joints, etc are all new.

So my plans for it ?

Not a lot, enjoy it ! !

The stripped out interior is not quite for me, so I have already bought a new interior (pics below), and am probably going to look for a nice condition set or get a new set of plain black doors cards to go with it.

Oh and of course fit my MK1 Golf OC grill plaque and a website address sticker to rear window

So what's everyone's thoughts , good and bad

Cheers

Rich

Current Interior

Start of the new interior (just fitting the front seats for now, and keeping back stripped)

Very interesting buy Rich and I'm glad you found your CAR !!

I love the colour and the wheels look decent as well.

It looks like it's been done to an excellent standard and the bay looks slick.

Your new interior looks fantastic especially the front seats and with new black door cards it will look great, I'm not digging the current interior

Enjoy it and play with it as you wish 👍

Love  everything  apart from the interior and you are going to fix that anyway.

one if nicest colours I have seen a MK1 painted in. wheels do look a little OTT, maybe 16" would suit it better, but not for the cost of changing them.  The detailing looks brilliant, almost too good to use.

RichardHall - Thanks mate, yeah a bit worried about getting it dirty but underside paint has a glossy ish texture so every month or so I will just pop it on friends ramp and give it a wipe over. Might consider some 16inch RS's or something next summer if I go off the 17's but for now I like the idea of being a bit different any only a few running 17's

jellybelly - Thanks mate, I think its quite me :-)

ans4r - Thanks mate, if I don't like them or cant fit them quite how I want them, as current seats are on fixed bars welded in floor, then I already have them sold lol, but you could be second in queue

SANJP - Thanks mate , sorry we never got to catch up on phone, kept remembering to call but late and night as been working late at work all month. yeah bought Steve's seats, just think the brand new covered grey stripe Recaro's would work really well in the car and against the exterior paint colour etc - I am gutted as don't think I am going to make cruise as already committed to stuff Sunday day early , but am considering just trying to sleep Sat day and drinking a load of redbull as cant see me getting away from London till 3 am and would be a 2.5-3 hour back as would not want to push it on motorway and pick up stone chips !

Good god that's awesome, don't think I've ever seen any on 17s
Must have cost a fair whack!
air ride suspension upgrade would finish that off for me once the interioR is done!
Wicked stuff

ijs1985 - Thanks mate - I have blew me budget on this so air wont be any time soon, but could be a potential in the future as not had air and always fancied it. In truth this rides nice and wheels sit nicely in arches so I can get away without air for now, which is just as well

This bring back memories from anyone?, when I bought it I didn't even realise it was this car, but when I saw an old VW mag with it in, I remember when the guy was breaking it, and selling it in bits on here a few years back

Stunning car rich, very nice. The new seats look amazing.

I think air-ride would look fantastic. Personally I'd drop to 16's, but it's your car, just enjoy it
