Jaaquo's MK1 Cabby Daily Driver :)

Post

Hi, just thought i would do a bit of writting to continue arf333's log :)i bought my MK1 Cabriolet from Scott Brimble (arf333) early sept 2013, i fell in love when i saw the pictures online. i spent a while on the web reading all his posts and couldnt wait to see her in person!
She didnt disappoint, and i couldnt walk away without her!! (however forgetting to bring the money with me kinda made me!) so after leaving a deposit and draining my bank i managed to drive my first VW cabby home!! (still need to name her, any suggestions welcome!)

driving her home 40 miles back to cheltenham, remembering what it felt like to have a lowered car and have 4x4's lights in your eyes, was great! she didnt miss a beat all the way home! however the clutch felt extremly hard, thought at first it was because i wsa used to a hydraulic clutch, but then when lifting the bonnet i realised the clutch adjuster had a tendancy to slip to the left hand side of the flange it sits on, and was putting stress on the cable. after a quick bodge with locking wire to hold the cable in a verticle position through the flange it became alot more manageable!

since having her home and using her for my daily to work, she developed a starting issue, first of im sure many issues to come!

after 2 weeks of annoying the mrs and ignoring her for forums and books, i managed to fix the issue! a one way valve the wrong way! now she runs lovely :)so my list now grows of what i want to do her to be fully satisfied :)1. the door lock mechanism unlocks but fails to lock occasionally, due to the fork piece off the lock barrel being worn.
2. hopefully before winter kicks in the crankshaft seal looks like it has a small leak, nothing major, but enough for me to want to carry oil in the boot! while im doing that i may as well do the camshaft seal and anyother seal i can find that would require the timing belt off!
3. im looking for a retro sliding tuner styled radio, however with a ipod usb slot. they must be out there somewhere, if anyone can help me on that one i would appreciate!
4. secure the bonnet release in the footwell.
5. drivers side door opening lever is slack and needs tightening.
6. bit of rust next to boot catch which will need removing and re-painting.

and to date i cant think of anything else to put on the list!

the link below is arf333's restoration posts and pictures.

Hey jack glad to see you on here !!!

Glad that its being used daily i felt like it was wasting away on my drive :((still need to name her, any suggestions welcome!)
The car was called Beryl :D

I didnt chose the name the people I bought it off named it that and it stuck

a one way valve the wrong way!
richyhill special ;]

1. the door lock mechanism unlocks but fails to lock occasionally, due to the fork piece off the lock barrel being worn.
really? which one? i think there may be new locks in the box of spares

2. hopefully before winter kicks in the crankshaft seal looks like it has a small leak, nothing major, but enough for me to want to carry oil in the boot! while im doing that i may as well do the camshaft seal and anyother seal i can find that would require the timing belt off!
:[
it was holding oil fine on the drive maybe its difference of being driven every day vs. 2 or 3 times a month

3. im looking for a retro sliding tuner styled radio, however with a ipod usb slot. they must be out there somewhere, if anyone can help me on that one i would appreciate!
you can get them there is a reveiw in an old Golf+ i got i will dig it out and get back to you

4. secure the bonnet release in the footwell.
My bad i forgot to screw it back on i took it off to run the +ve for the awwooogah horn through and forgot to screw it back in. there should be a long black screw in spares box its that one

6. bit of rust next to boot catch which will need removing and re-painting.
really ??? :|the whole car shouldve been treated for rust before it was painted, where exactly is it comign through ??

Glad youre enjoying it and i hope you had the roof down on the weekend!!!

Scott

hey! yea loving the drive. puts a smile on my face each time i get in it!

door lock, is a bit of wear in the fork shaped piece which comes off the lock barrel, just needs adjusting or a new one adding. will look in the box tonight!

leak is about a 2 pence piece a day, just put a jug of oil in the boot to keep it topped up, and make sure i dont park on anyone i likes drive!!

radio, i would be so grateful of that. love the old style slider look, but do need a modern touch to it!

ill have a look for that screw tonight and get that screwed down :)

rust, is to the right hand side of the bonnet catch, took as much out as i could the other day, however looks like its gone all the way through :( need tot ake the bonnet catch off and cut it out and weld a new piece in there :) will do that when i have some more paint :) just covered it in hammerite to give it some protection at the moment!

had the roof down the whole weekend! had it down whenever the skys are rain free! clinging onto summer with my finger nails now!!

see you 13th in malvern mate! fingers crossed for sun!!

With your door handle problem you can bend the catch in the door out a little. I had a simular problem after I fitted armour door plates as the lock/handle sits a couple mm further out.

Ooo! Thanks! Ok I'll have a look at doing that later :) armour plating? What was the cause for that!?

It's the metal plates at the base of door handles. Bit of added security on the door locks :)

I had someone have a go at my Scirocco door handles so used them to cover the damage.
Just fitted them to the Golf for extra protection.
Recommend these, been on the car for 14 years now and still look good.

so since i have had the car i have been working here and there on it to keep it up to scratch :)
i have replaced the passengers door locking fork so it now locks and opens on the key :)
the bonnet release is now secured properly
and the rust has been protected until i get a proper chance to cut the rust out and re meld a new plate in :)

i have also found that the headlights on the car at the moment are continental so are high to the right, instead of being high to the left. which could be the reason why people kept flashing me in oncoming traffic at night! new ones will be arriving monday so i shall be changing those when i get the chance!

the light switch dimmer has failed, so i have bypassed the dimmer and replaced the lights with an LED strip (meant to be used for doll houses!) its a bit of a bodge, but will do until i gather the funds to make a better job out of it!

i have also done the modification for the Pierburg 2E2 to the Weber. it now runs like a dream, and will start in the cold!

the brake lights were stuck on for a period of time, however that just turned out to be the brake switch slipping off the pedal.

next items on the list are:
a new radio.
road tax is due end of the month, which soon snuck up on me!
the drivers handle cable still needs the slack taken out of it.
rust needs cutting out and re welding.

now christmas is looming, any more purchases will have to hold fire until the funds can change back to their correct priorities :(

Glad to see you are tracking through with it well mate
