Watson's engine rebuild - small update . . . .

Watson’s engine rebuild - new mot and a few new pics....

A big thank you to Steve G for all his help in HGT's engine rebuild. I've been off work for a while after shoulder surgery. So with no driving, or using my arm, HGT was stuck  in the garage and going nowhere. Steve suggested it was the perfect time to turn the worst part of the golf into the best bit.

So with me as teaboy and operating the camera with one good arm, Steve lifted the engine out and started stripping it down.  The Plan -  rebore the block, new pistons, clean and paint block.  Head and manifolds vapour blasted - also various other engine parts vapour blasted before painting or plating.

Dirty engine ! (ashamed!)

Not going for the 20v turbo transplant then Dave?

Good, glad you're not. Can't wait for the next pic installment.

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

He's an old man with a dodgy arm, don't make him repeat himself!

Got a fair bit done this week. Mostly cleaning and painting the components, and  rebuilding the head.

Block cleaned and painted.

Couldn't resist placing the head and rocker cover on the block to see what it looked like.

Had a bit of a job hunting down a new oil feed pipe that runs inside the rocker cover, the fixing lugs on the old one had broken off.  Thanks to Dubboy for finding a replacement. Steve's been fitting up the block  since the last update. Although the old crankshaft was in good condition, the oil pump drive was worn - apparently this is quite a common weak point. A quick trip to Crazyquiff, and we had a new one - well a new second hand one in much better condition.  I've also decided to have HGTs empty engine bay prepped and repainted before the rebuilt engine is dropped back in. Can't wait to drive it again.

Afraid the mk1 won't be ready for DATP. Engines all finished, but can't get the bay painted till the week of the 16th. Just not enough time  :banghead:  Was really looking forward to this one and the convoy bit too. Have a good time chaps - and have a burger for me !

That's a shame but you could still come to the show, will even let convoy in with us ;)
