New Mk1 Gti Owner - Build Thread

Hi, Picked up my Mk1 a couple of week ago and very pleased with it! However its more of a project as it could do with a bit of money spending on it such as a re spray. Its a solid base and rust is about but nothing major. Its been stood in a barn since 2003 and then put back on the road this january by the previous owner. So he told me that he replaced the fuel pump and pipes along with many of the brake components and so on.

However what I think is the fuel pump is leaking from the upper pipe as it looks like it has been retro fitted as the link has snapped. Sprry about my lack of technical knowledge Im hoping to learn from this car though! Just wondered if someone could point me in the right direction with a part no. or even the right part which Im looking at.

I have a Mk5 as a daily driver and bought the mk1 because i have always wanted one before they are all 6k+. Problem is that I cant find classic car insurance for the mk1 as Im 19. I have been told it is possible to get it under 21?

Here is a photo of it… and the leaking area once the engine is started. Hope this helps. Thanks!

Ok. Thanks for your reply.

Iv had it off and it looks like the connection, (elbow joint) has snapped off so the pipe doesn't sit on too well. The pipes are something I'm going to change soon as I don't think they are too clever either. I'll post a picture tomorrow to see if that helps.

Thanks

Chris

Hi, thanks! My plans are to put it back to original eventually. Just want to make sure all the important bits are done first. Yeah that's what I thought about the insurance. But the car of the month driver says he has classic insurance at 17? so I just wondered if it was possible.
Thanks

Chris

I think that you should get some maintenance with the leaks. It might get worst if you don't try to fix it early. :D

Well the car isn't moving at the moment and wont be until the leak is sorted and once I removed it it's made it a lot worse as it won't sit properly anymore. Would be pretty hard to find one of them Banjo connections so I wonder whether a repair/retro fit would be best.

Cheers

hi
im pretty sure you could source the connection on the net , but if you want to the job right first time Crazy Quiff sells the hose your looking for , but i dont know where the other end goes , its either from the pump or to the Supply fuel Line , no point in buying the CQ pipe if the supply line Has being cut to fit the Hose
there is 3-4bar pressure in the supply line & the correct suitable fittings should be used
cheers

Thanks for that. Think I should be able to source that connection as Iv just removed it to have a look.

Another question iv got is the paint code lp9v is for my car. At some point in it's life someone has sprayed it with a rattle can, even over the stickers. Taking a bit of the paint back to the original paint with polish shows a more dark grey than black colour. Is that paint code for Swartz black? A history check shows it's originally black.

Thanks

Iv just fitted the accumulator to supply line fuel hose from crazy quiffs which fits fine however as i expected the supply line will now not fit as it has been cut. Is my best option to replace the supply line with one from crazy quiffs. And if I do this would the line bolt straight onto the accumulator to suppy line hose?

Thanks.

dont take the fact its says blak on the v5 as it being black originally the owner might have changed the colour on the v5 with the dvla.

try adrian flux. if the quote is too high may be good for u to invest in some bits like uprate brakes, suspension etc even just steelies instead of alloy wheels. they like uprated parts, and no alloys mean less chance of bein stolen. a good alarm on it helps too. if you think its worth it of course :)

oh and i struggled ot get insurance as im 22 and my car is over 25r years old. classic car insurers wouldnt touch me... i guess becuase of my age, so last resort was adrian flux. i phoned them instead of online quote too. like your car tho lots of potential!

Thanks for all the advice with the insurance guys, think with my age and it being the gti I can't afford to insure this as well as my daily. So plans are to get it ready for when I'm 21. Gives me two years to get it looking a bit more tidy.

Yeah I looked at the sticker on the rear panel to get the paint code lp9v. A bit of forum searching came up with a rare metallic swarz black/grey but no one seems to be sure. The black paint code is la9v. I thought there was only one black in the gti model.
