My AUSTRIAN IMPORT 3 door GL! - **FOR SALE SOON ** :-(

Post

After searching for ages for a nice 3 door mk1 with a nice original interior, and not finding much at all, I started to look elsewhere to see what was available abroad. I stumbled across this little beauty in austria! 1 owner with 80,000km (about 50k miles) in one of my favourite colours Lido green and with a brown/beige interior to die for. I just had to take the gamble and buy it! My plan was to buy it and then take a flight over there and drive it back, but as it wasn't TUV tested it wasnt possible. So I set out trying to find a shipping company that didnt cost the earth! I finally managed to find one within my budget, a deposit was paid for the golf, and the transport was booked. After being messed about by the shipping company with delays I then had to find a new one. Just the other day I found someone that could do it for the same money and I paid for the golf! Pretty scary stuff seeing as the guy could just run off with the cash and I'd never see my money or the car again. My only security is that I knew the owner had the car as I got him to take a photo with his name and date on a peice of paper placed on the car. But even then that doesn't mean that its a totally safe bet.

But heres the photos of it, still got the original dealer number plate holders and stickers in windows. Its got a few dents and scuffs, but as (i was told) its been garaged all its life Im hoping there is little rust or corrosion. Being a 3 door GL (did we get these in the uk??) its got lots of nice chrome bits and a great interior which I just love!

My worrying subsided a little last night as I received this photo from the shipping company proving that the car is on its way to me and the owner hasn't just run away with the money Pheuww!  :)

So fingers crossed it gets to me in 1 piece! I should get it monday or tuesday. Then I will get the chance to have a good look over it and see what sort of condition its actually in  :lol:Fingers crossed it will be as good as it looks.

My plans are in this order:

- Good wash and valet
- Service & MOT (source parts I need for this? do I need new headlights? and what about the speedo?)
- Fix any problems I might find
- Coilovers
- Wheels
- Then gradually tidy up dents and paint as I go.

I'm Newbie to the site so I've just been looking through the posts and came across your story. Having looked through endless pages of Mk1's for some time this one looks great. Please post photo's of the arrival….fingers crossed!

Yeah I'm still looking I saw one on autotrader but not really what I want. I think it will take a while as I'm trying to track one of previously owned cars down. :'(

Yeah it seems to take ages to find a good one! I was into aircooled vw's before, and its much easier to find a nice old 60's beetle than it is to find a good mk1! Best of luck tracking down, have you found out whether it still exists?

the car I'm looking for was my first car (and VW) after passing my test, it was a mk1 gti and my memory is telling me the reg was A202 (I can't find the photo's to confirm) and I was advised it had a centre spread in a car mag which I'm trying to track down also. the quest continues…

Hi,

another LHD on the site, then, and a nice-looking one too - congratulations.

In answer to your question, about headlights, yes you will need new ones since the dip will be to the wrong side.
I may be interested in the old ones if they are in good condition, so hang on to them!

Robin

VW Golf 1500D 5-door 1978 - was daily (wet)
VW Golf 1800 cabriolet 1980 - daily (dry)

Mercedes W108 280s 1970 - dusty and forgotten
Mercedes S123 200T 1983 - to be renovated
Mercedes C124 1989 - Winter Beater
BMW E21 1976/82 - dusty but not forgotten
