mk 1 track car in need of lots of tlc, ex trim sport?

Hi all, only just joined having bought my first mk1. It's been 6 agonising days since she arrived but I finally got a chance to get started. Now need to start lists of what needs doing and bits to buy. Not looking forward to removing the underseal! Here's a few pics so far

Thanks, I was thinking of going the 20v turbo route, but got lots of rust issues to sort out first. Part of me just wants to put an engine in her asap, but better start with the body first, as there's no plans to sell her ever & the kids will probably never get a go lol

Hi there and welcome to the forum. Not a bad starting point. You're right to sort the body first with no engine in etc.

Saves you ripping it all again down the line.

Good luck.

Nice car mate. Definitely get the bodywork done first, like smudger say's, you don't want to be stripping it again later, plus if you go for the 20vT route, you can do a bit of modding in the bay before painting.

Welcome to the forum, Andy.

I think I know that car that the Ex Trimsport car? if so some of your misiing bits are living here in Kent with me!! including carbon door/boot cards stainless steel bonnet stay window nets and a few other bits I had off it in the winter of 2006 poss 2007 when I found it in a barn in wales!!

Speeding is like masturbation, everyone does it ,but it's not something you should record and put on the internet!!

If you research Trimsport should come up with a few archive pics ,when I purchased those parts the guy that owned it at the time was working in Dubai foe EVO Magazine, the oil cooler was externally mounted below No plate if I recall and had deep dish alloys on it .To be honest was a lot more complete when I saw it but as I say that was at least 6 years ago!! There was a few threads on here I may even have pics somewhere?

That's awesome to find some history for her, and at least the parts went to a good home, loving the gulf colour scheme! Hoping to  return her to former glory, carbon roof  hopefully

Hi, it's nice to see this car emerge again.  8)

I can help with a bit of history on it. Obviously first off it was built as a promo car for Trimsport. It would be seen at shows alongside their stand, and also at trackdays.

At some point I would say 2006-7, it was sold on. Trimsport I think had ceased to exist.

Whilst Trimsport had it at Castle Combe one year, it got caught in the side and door. I can't remember the year, but maybe 2002, 2003, 2004. I think there was a coming together with another car, but I wasn't there. Nothing too bad, maybe caught one of the arches also.

Edit: I think Trimsport also took it to the 'Ring.

It was bought by Jon Saxon, who is a journalist who used to write for VW Motoring mag, and then moved onto to CAR Magazine and then working in Dubai as Editor for Evo magazine. He has his own project Mk1 racer, a Mk1 Driver in dark blue, which was being built and documented in VW Motoring. With the demise of VW Motoring, his car then got featured in subsequent mags.

Along the way, Jon collected parts, so bought this Trimsport car when it came up. He bought it for the engine, which went into his Mk1, power listed at 189bhp (just looking at the email now, dated April 2007). So this Trimsport car may stand a chance of a mention in CAR and Evo mag also. Jon bought various parts off my ex-VW Cup racer aswell, all for the blue car.

He definitely still had the Trimsport car in July 2007 and I remember it taking while to sell.

I have Jon's contact details, so he can probably fill in the Welsh ownership. I know it took a while to sell, but the market was flat for proper Mk1 builds, whereas now track builds have truly taken off. PM me for his contact details  :)

Not sure if anyone else has mentioned it but this was featured in the Golf mag as one point too (will have the mag somewhere so could find out when).
Remember seeing it as York Drag strip one year.
