2x Mk1 Golfs on eBay

Hi

Can anyone help, or give some advice on how much these 2 cars are worth!

This one failed its MOT on 19/08/14 because of the following reasons..

Nearside Front inner and outer sill Body or chassis has excessive corrosion, seriously affecting its strength within 30cm of the body mountings (6.1.B.2)

Offside outer sill Body or chassis has excessive corrosion, seriously affecting its strength within 30cm of the body mountings (6.1.B.2)

Offside Rear inner sill Body or chassis has excessive corrosion, seriously affecting its strength within 30cm of the body mountings (6.1.B.2)

Service brake: efficiency below requirements (3.7.B.7)

The seller now claims underneath has no rust and is sold underneath. Would people stay away from this?

Depends what you prefer mate modded or original ? 
Would worry me a bit about that mot though unless there are receipts to prove work has been done and a new mot provided.
Mine is standard but I do really like that first white one 😍

If the silver one needs that welding sorting for the MOT then it will have more that can't be seen. It looks a good car but IMHO too much money - for 6k I'd expect no welding required

The white one looks really nice - again should be mint for that money and it doesn't look bad. The only things I can see (and I'm being picky) is the tailgate seal is holed and a number of separate pieces and it looks as if the inlet pipe on the K-Jet is wrapped with tape. I could be wrong, but it makes you think if this is the case if anything else isn't done to the best standard.

The white one would be the one I'd plump for first as it looks the best from the pics

Sorry guys my bad! I meant to say that the welding has all been done, and it passed the MOT the following month with no advisories! (I've checked). However, not knowing how bad it was, or how good its been done, would you recommend to stay away from it, or is it a good risk to take for the car as he said £5,000 would be accepted?

As for the white one, he said £6,000 would be accepted.

Do these seem reasonable prices for the cars? I'm new into the Mk1 scene and not fully clued up.. yet. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

My advice would be to get out there and look at plenty of them that are for sale. You'll start to see the good bits and bad bits then.

Regards the silver one, it all depends on how well it was welded up or has it just had a few patches to scrape through an MOT. Is there receipts for the welding done and if so how much did it cost?

A properly welded car should look like its not been welded if that makes sense?!

Regards the price it also depends on the paintwork as well as the underside. these 2 parts of the car are which cost the money to put right if they're not up to scratch but that depends what you want from the car.
If its been painted previously (which a car of 30 years old is highly likely to have been) you have to ask why and what lurks underneath? Do you have the required knowledge to route out bad repairs?
Campaign roofs are notorious for rotting and if hidden by recent fresh paintwork could make it seriously overpriced due to the cost of putting it right.

A lot of MK1 sellers have jumped on the bandwagon and are pushing high prices. I'm not saying Mk1's aren't worth it but there are a lot of highly priced dogs out there.

Personally at 6K with 160K on the clock id be very careful and look through its paperwork not only for expenditure but also continuity, and any other history. From that you maybe able to tell whether its been loved in the past and for how long.  Five years a go a similar car would have been lucky to fetch 2K. I know - I had one and got rid of it because I knew it needed money spending on it.

I now own what I would like to think of as one of the better surviving mk1s having only covered 50K but it has taken a further 5 years to get it where I wanted it in terms of a concours finish and cost  treble on top of the purchase price, doing most of the work myself but i did want it as good as it could be including the paint which i didn't do.

Standard v modified is personal choice but a good standard one will always appreciate more in value as time passes.

Having said all that sometimes you have to just take the plunge and learn as you go which is basically what i did with my 160k campaign. It made me realise what I really wanted  from mk1 ownership and taught me what to look out for but I was lucky that I never paid over the odds for it in the first place so it wasn't an expensive lesson. - Don't make it an expensive lesson!

If they're both willing to drop a grand straight off the bat then that would concern me a little.

Heed Graham's advice, it's spot on. Just go take a look at them, or as many MK1's as you can. If you miss out there'll always be another one.

When you know what/where you're viewing post up a new thread looking for a local member to come with you, I'm sure if someone is free they would and hopefully can help look over the car without rose tinted specs, just in case you have any! lol  :thumbs:

The silver car was on eBay for £7k and it was also in a local auction and never sold.

I'm sure it's the same car but it might not be ?
