Post

Hello guys needs help, I followed the gear replacement link on the home page to do my gear linkages and bushes but I'm still having problems, when I shift to 1st it goes in to reverse without me even pushing down on the gear shifter, and to get it to go to 2 or 4 it seems to only want to select one gear which is 2 I think not 4 which is also a problem I had before and ideas what it could be losing patience now I tried to follow everything on the link so nothin messed up but I still have

Any ideas guys, it's like it going in to 2 when it should go 4th or is there anything else I can check, or change, I am thinking of a gear box oil change what's the best place or what grade of fluid to use ?

Hey bud,

have you ensured the gap is set  at 19mm for the white lever ?

Hello jonny yep I check the 19mm gap between the L shape clip and the metal bracket, still problems I wonder why it's still the same I change everything linkages and bushes and the ball assembly on the gear stick literally followed step
By step, before the linkage changes it had the same problem even tho some of the bushes were in a bad way and also one link way shot, I'm just wondering would it be a gear box problem, but when it did this before you had to really push it towards 4 to get it to slot in to 4th the car had been stood for a very long time 9 years I believe and has only had a trip here am there for moting, I think she might need a Italian tuning lol but still would be nice to know what else I can look at to sort this out I will hopefully do the oil change so that's sorted

been thru this?
Gear Change Linkage - The Mk1 Golf Owners Club

if the stick goes over to reverse without pushing down sounds like the stick housing that bolts to the top of the tunnel is to blame

edit: what engine is it?

I lined the holes up for the stick housing still didn't make a difference I followed the step by step of that guide, could it be a gear box issue but is does go in to 4th when the stick to really pushed towards 4th, the engine is 1.6, would also a oil change make the difference, thanks Johnny was thinking of you hopin you read this

Lol I don't know I bought it as it was and had been stood for 9 years lol so hasn't been driven some if the bushes won't even there and some had perished and one aftermarket link was shot and the linkages and the bushesthat  were ok has vw stamps on them so I'm not sure if it's ever been changed or maybe someone got genuine it's a 1982, it had 4 and +E on the gear knob, the gear box number is FM 26020

FM is a 5 speed, 4+e just means 5th is an 'economy' gear, i.e. very tall!

piccy up your linkage and hopefully someone can spot if there are 4 speed parts in there or not.

try manually selecting gears at the box lever, take care when shifting though dont put too much force in you can overshift and lock it as i found out showing a box to a potential buyer lol

Thanks Johnny, that nut on mine it fully to the right so I will do it so the pin is flush with the top, but this is just for 5th gear so shouldn't have anything tondo with my selecting 4th-2nd I have tired manually from the rods and reverse is easy, and most of the ones like 1,3,and 5 seem to be ok but going back to 2,4 it seems abit stiffy like it's trying to find a slot but not getting in properly I will be doing a oil change can anyone recommend the oil I should use ( gearbox oil lol ) but the better one that you guys recommend and best place to get it thanks

just a thought have you tried with the engine running, sometimes if its been sat for a bit the box can get a little stiff and just needs spinning over for a bit to lube everything up

VW oil is good stuff, shouldnt be too expensive either
