MK2 Servo and MC - Future proof (larger brakes and 16v possibility?)

Post

Hello All,

Just picked up my MK1 GTi Cabriolet. Coming from a modern car the brakes terrify me.

I know about the MK2 9" servo and 22mm Master cylinder. However I may plan on a a 16v conversion in the near future and I have heard that there may be fitment issues with the MC - should I be looking for a specific MC and reservoir for this? Also, I may upgrade the calipers in the future (Willwood 4-pots, Vauxhall 256mm or 280mm etc) so should I be looking at an alternative servo or MC?

In short I don't want to be messing about with the servo and MC only to have to do it again in 12 months time.

Thanks

I think its alright with the 16v but you will need the right angle dizzy cap

as above, its a case of get a different cap that fits with more room. for kr/9a I recommend abf dizzy cap and rotate the dizzy 180 degrees so it points forwards, and use an 8v king lead if needed. alternative is carefully mark out and cut another dizzy cap locating notch so it can face up lik the abf.

another option is it full abf engine with abf management, then dizzy cap already has loads of room. thats my preferred option ;)

Thanks gents,

So to confirm, all I need is the 9" servo and 22mm master cylinder and I'm good to go with most options?

To confirm, I'm more than likely to go for VW 280mm calipers with adaptors.

yep! there are various larger MC that fit the 9" servo but you only need those with monster front calipers.

theres a 23mm mc fitted to seat cupra 20v plus most ford focus which is a fair bit shorter which can help with clearance issues, though im not sure if its short enough to avoid the 16v dizzy!

anyway this is how much room you get if you use the ABF dizzy as above:

How will the 23mm master cylinder performance differ from 22mm?

I had an ABF in my old MK2 and I loved it. Don't tempt me! I wanted to be more period with this car and fancied a 9a.

from what i understand a larger mc will reduce the pedal travel for a given size of caliper piston. so if you used a normal 20mm mc with g60 brakes you would have longer travel than you had before and the 22mm unit puts it back to how it should be.

some rate them and some dont, my mate put one on his G60 when deleting the ABS but didnt like it so went back to 22mm

i used the 22mm mc and 256mm audi/rocco 16v brake combo and found it to be awesome :)

Ahh, so the larger the MC, the shorter and mor bitey the feel? Sounds good to me, I like snappy brakes.

worth a try then, they do need slight mods to fit though. need to either drill down the mc 3mm, or grind the little spud in the servo down 3mm, or fit 3mm spacer (may affect the air seal) plus either fit focus/cupra reservoir or grind down between the 2 holes so a mk2 reservoir fits.

can find em pre-modded on ebay, watch out some have different size holes for an easy life you want M10x1
