Mk1 Suspension Kit Advice

Post

Hi

My car has FK Coilovers on at the moment and they have been on the car for a while. The previous owner had them wound really low and the spings were just floating around O_oWound them up and the ride is still rock hard like there is no suspension at all. Im thinking of changing them for a set of shocks/lowering springs and was looking at the AP shocks & Spring Kits on Venom does anyone have any experience of these?

Cheers

Hello bud,

Quite strangely I was just about to post the exact same question!  I've got an '88 GTI cabby with the original suspension and its a bit tired to be honest, so I'm looking at some way of sharpening it up.  I'm looking at shocks/springs rather than coilovers and I've been looking at the AP Sports kit.  If you do decide to go for it I'd be really interested in hearing what you think of it.  Would be great if anyone has already fitted this and could provide some opinion.  I'm half tempted just to go for it, as I've been looking at various options for a while now.

I had a chat with Venom and they suggested the FK shocks and Springs Kits are slighly more complaint than the AP's

Hopefully someone who has them fitted will comment that way we can make a choice.

The FK coilovers i have fitted at the moment are so hard its ridiculous. It can be wound down really low so it looks great but its not good to drive on a regular.

The general view seems to be that unless you spend big money on coilovers the ride quality wont be good hence why im going for shocks and springs.

Id considered going for a set of factory shocks and putting lowering springs on them as well.

I'll update you on which way i go with it

Yeah, I've not really considered coilovers for that very reason.  I was toying with the idea of rebuilding my suspension with lowering springs, but I'm leaning towards just buying a complete set up instead.  Had a quick look on the Venom website - which FK set are you thinking of?

I have just put the AP Coilover kit, when wound down LOW…it is rock hard.   Wound it back up to around 3 finger spaces between tyre and wheel arch, and it is slightly more forgiving.

I've been looking at the same thing, spring will not go as low  but  won't shake ya teeth out either haha..

I've had AP coilovers on for about 1200 miles now, they seem to be becoming a bit more forgiving!

What type of space do you have between tyre and wheel arch ??

Could maybe get a finger in! Not sure, off hand, how much further they could be wound down.

Hi, I am wanting to revert back to springs and shocks also but am now totally confused. I bought the car with the coilovers and its a shocking ride. I was thinking of going back to standard setup but with Eiback springs to lower it 40mm alround. Any advice on this???

Standard shocks with the Eibach are probably the best option, i am going to go for the Weitec shock and spring combo...

Thats actually not a bad price, I was expecting more. I guess you have to replace the bump stops etc which is a cost ontop but there not a massive bill

You can get it all from Heritage or Classic-VW but I am only guessing you will need to. I doubt I have much of the original suspension left at all
