I'm a fitment novice! In need of some wheel advice!

I'm looking at getting some new wheels, they're 8.5J all round which even to me is causing alarm bells to ring.
I've been on "will they fit", and apparently they're going to stick out 5.2cm more than my current wheels. My rear arches are wider than standard (current wheels are lost in them) so I'm not worried about those. My front wheels currently sit only slightly in the arches (not far off flush when looking down). I don't currently have the plastic arches on the car, although I do want them. I'm just wondering if they will help me at all in getting the front wheels to fit legally? Or if not what work would be involved!
Cheers.

for every inch wider add 13mm offset for same fitment
so a 7j wheel with et20 would sit the same as 8j with et33
in your case if current wheels are 7j et38 and new wheels are 1.5j (inch) wider you'd need them to be ET57 ish (13 +7mm)
so with that you'd have 40mm extra 'poke'
you may have to check this though it has been a LONG time since i needed to calculate offsets

I'm thinking spacers on my original wheels, this is gonna be too much hassle I think.
Thanks for the help.

Front are 7J ET20
Rears are 8J ET5
All have 175/50/R13 tyres on them (slight stretch on fronts, bit more on the rears; see below pics;
7J stretch
8J stretch
And this shows the fitment, i have fitted 5mm spacer all round aswell.
