How do i fit an in line brake light switch

Post

Hi everyone, I've fitted a power steering conversion to the Cabby. Problem is the replacement steering column does not have the hole in it for the brake light switch. I drilled it out and fitted the switch but the pedal will not reach it so the brake lights are permanently on. I've heard you can fit an in line brake light switch on the master cylinder. The master cylinder on the Cabby has no spare outlets, so does anyone know how I could go about fitting an in line switch and is there a VW switch for this? I believe some Golfs had the in line switch, I may be wrong. Thanks for looking at this! Stu.

Anyone Know? If not i'll fabricate a bracket off the foot pedal.

My 1978 Mk1 Scirocco has the brake light switch in the brake master cylinder, there is 2 (don't know why there is 2?) You will need to buy a new master cylinder with 6 outlets and find the switches and wiring to fit so might be best to make make some sort of bracket to hold the switch close to the pedal.

I think it will be easier to do as you suggest on the footpedal,  otherwise you need 2 T pieces which need putting into the 2 lines from the master cylinder, you then need 2 switches (because there are 2 brake lines), then the wiring needs connecting.

you can get away with 1 switch on the mc, there are 2 due to the system having 2 circuits so lights will still work if you loose one of the brake circuits. though tbh, if that happened i dont think you would be too worried about the brake lights rather the fact it has become quite difficult to stop

All understood thanks! John at the moment all the wiring is to the foot pedal but that's no issue to extend. I'm just a real novice on brakes/master cylinder, that said have a flaring kit and not afraid to have a go. How would I go about fitting an in line switch on the master cylinder? at the moment there is just 2 pipes going into it, 1 in and 1 out.

The majority of motor cycles have a switch on the rear brake that have a spring which would be made to fit on the pedal.

MK2/3 golf have M10x1 thread T pieces in the brake systems which would be perfect for this purpose :)

on a mk2 they're on the passenger side, not sure on mk3 but assume similar sort of area. they're attached on the brake lines somewhere anyway you'll find em!
