Exhaust creak?

Post

Hi,

both my Golfs (Golves?) have developed a similar noise in the last few months. My '80 cabriolet started first, heavily laden on holiday in the Summer, and my '79 diesel 5-door has started imitating it in the last week, again heavily laden.

It's a sort of creaking from under the front floor on taking off, when the torque from the engine causes (I think) the engine to twist on its mounts. If I lift the clutch gently there's no noise, but if I pull off from standstill quickly the noise is clear.

Could it be the exhaust shifting on its mounts, or am I barking up the wrong tree altogether?
Could it be the wishbones moving?

The 1800 cabriolet will also make the same noise if you accelerate hard after lifting off.

Any ideas?
Robin

Have you looked at the engine mounts? The front and rear mounts are the ones that take most of the load the side ones hardly ever need replacing.

Hi Robin, also check your exhaust gasket if you have the C clamps for the cup downpipe from your manifold. This could be causing your exhaust to creak on load/moving off etc

Cheers Hugh.

OK, thanks for that. All four engine mounts were replaced on the Cabriolet three years ago, so I'll have to check them, but it could well be the C clamps.
On the Diesel, there's a different connection from the manifold to the downpipe, with four bolts (I think) so I'll have a look at the engine mounts which have never been changed.

More news soon,
Robin
