Clutch worn out? Big deal changing it?

Post

My clutch doesn't engage before the pedal is almost fully released, and I wonder if this means it worn out. I only owned the car (1982 Mk1 1,5 litre) a week, and somewhat uncertain of what needs replacing.
Is changing the clutch compicated/expensive on this model? Does the engine have to be lifted away?

Clutch is easy to adjust, definitely worth a go adjusting before changing it etc. Also bear in mind, all the components of the clutch cable and its brackets/grommets etc need to be present, since the cable needs to be a defined length to get the appropriate control.

The other thing worth checking is the bulkhead where the clutch cable goes through, its a weak area and can corrode/fail here. Its simple enough to get a plate of metal to strengthen, or even a shaped repair/strengthening patch which could be glued or welded on.

Thanks a lot. My bulkhead seems fine, no rust there, and I think also all the components are present.
With regards to adjustment; I tried to find useful stuff on YouTube, and found a video of the Golf 2 which seems quite similar.

Since my clutch engages late, I assume I should start with increasing "free play". In other words, turn the threaded rod into the sleeve (up). If successful this would then having the pedal engaging sooner when releasing it from the floor up. Am I right?
Other ways to adjust pedal movement/ the interval where the clutch is gradually engaging?

A very generous offer. However, since I'm roughly based half way to Antarctica (Oslo, Norway) it would probably have to be a giant bacon sandwich should it tempt the ordinary member :) But thanks for offering assistance like this.

I can't remember (I have an auto) but basically there's only 2 ways it can adjust. If you can't work it out from looking at the cable, turn it eg 3 turns in one direction and see what the effect is. If its the wrong way, set it back to how it was then turn in the other direction.

You should have 10-15mm free play on the top of the feel of the pedal then it's adjusted right, if that's the case then your clutch is worn, if it's slipping change it but if it's working fine and just biting at the top of the pedal don't worry about just yet.
