starting problem

Post

I have to crank the car over for ages to start it even when it has been running and up to temp, its an 83 Tintop GTI 1.8 standard

I have replaced

Injectors with new Bosch items
New Bosch fuel accumulator
Braided flow and return fuel lines
Set the timing up & CO2 today as it went into a garage to be set up a few weeks ago and I don't think they plugged the advance when setting up the timing as it was retarded about 5 degrees and the Co was at 5 rather than the recommended 2
All wiring in the bay has been checked and quite a lot has been replaced or repaired.
Tested the CSV in a jar and it sprays for a short amount of time and then shuts off
Fuel tank is clean, new filler neck

once its running it is very rough from cold to the point it will stall if you don't keep a bit of throttle, once warm it idles very smoothly

blocked/failing WUR? tired fuel pump?

any suggestions much appreciated

Just a thought - How are the injectors? Did you check them too? New or old?

Cheers Hugh.

Could it be something as simple as a vacuum leak?

Could also try the fuel filter sometimes it can get clogged up with small bits from the tank. But I bet you have changed that too….

Cheers Hugh.

Going to take the WUR off this afternoon as have read there is a gauze inside

So took the WUR off and the gauze was partially blocked with what looked like very fine silt??, all cleaned out and back on
Also took out the the pressure needle from the CIS and was a bit grubby and not as free moving as I would like so put in a good used spare.

Started up and all seems good, smooth idle from start up and restarts easy.

Will try starting tomorrow from completely cold just to be sure.

Think it May of been due to when I took the steering rack off and replaced it i had the front of the car up high, when I lowered it down it washed some fine debris into the fuel pipe.

It's usually something simple like that. Fingers crossed you're sorted ;)
