Advice please on a stalling issue - 83 Mk1 GTI

Hi guys,
Been a loooong time since I posted on here.

Car has been off the road for nearly 2 years with Crazyquiff as part of restoration. More of that in another post.

Car has been back on the road for about 6 months - and all was well up until about 2 weeks ago. For that 6 months the car starts OK but runs a little rough - I think that is down to the WUR. Once warm, pulls like a train and idles OK.

As part of the excellent restoration carried out, had new fuel lines fitted, and the pump and accumulator dismantled and put back together. Tank was also removed as part of underside restorations.

Anyway, to the issue.

1. Turn key and can hear the click from Fuel Pump relay.
2. Can hear pump prime
3. Car starts and runs lumpy as it warms up.
4. I pull away and drive along only for the engine to cut out. Let it come to a stop - it generally starts up again and then will drive on. Once fully warm - no issues.

Has done this now the last few days and only when getting up to temp.

so I was thinking given the nature of the issue:

1. Faulty coil?
2. Faulty fuel pump relay?
3. fuel pump fault?

Thing is it only does it when warming up and then is spot on.

It does have a mild hot start issue - but the Accumulator is not weeping - so probably Fuel Pump return valve.

Whilst on the topic - anybody know where to buy a new/recon distributor?

Hope someone can help out.

Cheers!

Welcome back bytor

5th injector issue?

Also, I had a similar-ish problem on a GTi cabby recently. Adjusting the idle speed seemed to sort it ok as it was just too low.

I take it the metering head flap is all clean and set up correctly?

How old are the injectors?
they do have a tendency to leak when they get old so petrol drips into the cyinder and when starting the car the plugs are wet with petrol so it runs lumpy till they get warm and its burn off. Try unplugging the electrical connetor to the 5th injector and see if it starts any better as that is spraying in even more petrol into the engine.

Hi,
Thanks for the responses.

The injectors and seals were last replaced in July 1998 - so given that's 15 years after the car was built, maybe time to replace again!

TBH the running issues I'm not too concerned about - it's the random cut out. It's not a splutter and then cut out - you are coasting down the hill and it will literally switch off and leave the ignition light on. It's sudden. Car will restart fairly OK. Does this once/twice until engine is hot and then seems OK. I'm thinking electrical: coil/relay? Would have though a fuel issue would be more of a splutter and then stop.

Any thoughts?

Thanks again for help.

have a looky thru this thread, ignore the 16v bits just look at basic kjety stuff:
http://www.vwgolfmk2.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=25972

for ign timing its done at idle with dizzy vac pipe disconnected and plugged, 6 deg BTDC using the big diamond on fly or you can use TDC markers with a timing light with advance dial if you prefer.

idle and co done when car is hot and idling, disconnect breather and bung up hole on pipe to inlet if doing co but no need for idle setting.

next time you go for a drive run a wire from battery live to coil +, then see how it drives. you may want to put a fuse on it and be careful how its routed so it cant short out. if car runs much better look at the ignition switch and associated wiring

i woudl also look at dizzy wiring plus the coil and tci wires, make sure all ok under the rubber boots and the pisn in plugs all pushed in fully, are straight and tight.
