In tank fuel pump on a 1990 cab

Good afternoon,
I have a cab from 1990. I bought i in Sweden a couple of years ago and I have now brought it to the UK and registered it here. At the moment it's in a garage being worked on (albeit reluctantly) and the latest problem the guy has told me about is that the intank fuel/(lifter??) pump is shot and he says he can't get hold of a new one.
I was on this site couple of week ago reading through the forum searching for clues and read an article where a guy was searching for a pump for an 88 cab the member answering had posted a link of the correct pump on e-bay. I followed the link bought the pump and handed it over to Mr. mechanic man who told me today, after waiting 2 weeks, that the pump is wrong because it only has 1,5bar/22 psi pressure and says the injection system needs 3,5 bar to work properly. He's now told me to source another pump saying "a universal inline fuel pump with 8mm connectors". Well I wonder if he's just after bodging it up to get shot of it but obviously I don't want my Beauty car to be bodged.
Can anyone please help me and give me some idea of where I should look. The one I got from following the link on here had the terminals the wrong way round compared to the one taken out of the tank but all the ones I could see a Picture on e-bay had the terminals the way different to the one from the tank.
The car lives way on down in Cornwall, if anyone knows any tuned on people down this way as the garage where its at now doesn't seem that keen.
Thank you very for any help you may be able to give me with this.

Regards Richard

The lift pump in the fuel tank only helps lift the fuel out, it's the main fuel pump under the car which creates the most pressure. So I think your garage is wrong or I could be wrong as I can't remember when VW changed to digifant fuel injection system as I don't know about that…… but I fiited the lift pump in the link below to my 1988 Gti cabriolet running a K-jet fuel system and it worked for the last 4 years…

Do you know which type of injection system is fitted to your car? If you are not sure a picture of the engine will help.

Main fuel pump which lives under the car. (Not used this make as I found a bosch one)

Lift pump which lives inside the fuel tank (same one fitted to my car.)

It could be that your car coming from another country is different? With out a picture of what you have fitted it's really hard to say…

A good website for part numbers

Hello

Thank you for your advice, the car has the digifant injection system as I was told earlier today.
We ended up biting the bullet and getting truck to take the car away from the garage that said I'd bought wrong pump for intank ( he also told me there was only 1 on that car) and take it to a small 1-man band garage where the chap is a "older" vw buff.
He got the car and commented on all the loose wires and parts around the place. A little while later he rang to say that he'd attached all wire and fitted back the loose parts and the car started straight away, even sound how nice the car sounded!!
Well chuffed he got it sorted when the other garage were still none the wiser even after it had been there for 3 months (obviously not being worked on all that time). He says he couldn't understand why what they thought was wrong!!
So that guy has now gained himself a faithful customer for those times it's stuff that is more serious than I want to attempt.
Thank you for the link about sourcing parts/part numbers, be well useful in the future.
So happy when heard he'd got it running piece of cake!

Big thanks for your comment/help, much appreciated!!
