vacuum hose at back of instrument panel making horrid noise!!

Is my car going to spontaneously combust??!

Hello,

So I've just refitted my instrument panel and dash having replaced my speedo cable. That's working beautifully:), except now I have a hideous squealing noise coming from inside the dash, I guess it's the vacuum hose that connects to what I think is the fuel consumption gauge which is isn't working eitherO_o.

Is this vacuum leak going to negatively affect the performance of the engine? (Or worse still is the whole to explode when I hit over 4000rpm, which is what is currently sounds like?!!!:o)  It would be very nice if I can drive the car a bit for the next day or 2 before I have to remove the instrument panel YET(!) again, to refit the hose, hopefully correctly this time;).

ANY ADVICE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

Many thanks!

If it is the pipe, then Why  not detatch the pipe from the engine and then temporarily seal up the outlet from the engine?

Mines been doing this for about two months, if I give the dash a tap it stops, I wrote it off as not being serious due to the car still running haha

Thanks guys. I've been considering both of these options and if I can drive the car into work tomorrow and think again tomorrow night, that will be a massive bonus! Glad to hear yours has been driving for a couple of months like this 36thCrazyFist!!

If it's the vacuum hose which works the fuel consumption does the sound change when you accelerate or left of the gas?
I ran with out any instruments for a couple of days and the hose was not connected to anything and it would make more noise when accelerating and went quiet when coasting down a hill.

Mine makes noise around 2,500 - 3,500RPM in most gears, but goes once the pressure has built up, it stops, I'm assuming of course.

I actually had it disconnected for years, it was only when I took the air inlet manifold off to change the gasket that I saw the pipe had split in half just before it went through the bulk head

Thanks for all your responses. Yes, the noise was getting worse when I accelerated, calmed down as I took foot off the gas and went completely when I coasted down a hill.

But randomly the next morning when I drove it to work the noise had gone completely. (The night before I'd squeezed my arm through the space where the stereo should be and fiddled with the hose - didn't seem to work then, but a good night's rest must have done the trick…??!) No doubt it will come back though, but so far so good…
