oil light flickering on idle

Post

Oil light started to flicker on idle but goes out when moving . Abf engine if that helps. Oil pressure on vdo looks fine and oil level ok. Should I just replace the switch or could it be something else?

As you have a none standard setup up, I'd look at the wiring first.
I'm no expert but I'd be looking closely at that before anything else!

How old is the oil and what are you using?
What reading are the gauges giving?

where is the 0.3 bar switch? are you using a 2 pole oil pressure sender, or is the 0.3bar switch seperate?

as above whats the oil pressure gauge say when light is flickering?

basically, on a stock car you have 2 oil pressure switches a blue or brown 0.24-0.3 and a white 1.8 bar. the 0.3 bar one is responsible for triggering the light if pressure drops below 0.3 bar at idle, so for your issue you can ignore the 1.8 bar switch and concentrate on the 0.24-0.3 bar switch.

now for the oil pressure sender, some have 2 poles on them 1 for the gauge, 1 for the oil pressure switch warning. the 2 pole ones replace one of the old pressure switchers, and the most common ones replace the 0.3 bar switch. this is i ask if you have a 0.3 bar switch, or if you have a dual pole switch for the gauge.

also, oil pressure is higher at the oil filter housing than it is at the cylinder head which is why i ask where the 0.3 bar one is :)

what does the oil pressure gauge say when the light is actually flickering?

Both are at the bottom of the engine ( blue and white) and while flickering it's at about 10 bar.

thats way too high, cold it should be around 5 bar then drop as the temp rises to roughly 1 bar.

maybe the pressure relief valve in the oil pump is stuffed

ah

10psi is 0.7ish bar so it shouldn't trigger the light.  maybe swap the 2 wires on the oil switches over? they're opposite colours from abf to mk1 so it could just be that
