MFA oil buzzer issue

Post

Swapped clocks some issues resolved now new ones.

Felt pretty chuffed having bought some tidy clocks on eBay. The odometer was not working on the set in the car and no MFA just LCD clock. Fitted clocks last night went around the block milometer now working. MFA cycles through different things but then red flashing oil light and buzzer sounds. I have a set of vdo clocks mounted so I know oil pressure good. MFA does not read oil temp air temp or mpg. I haven't connected anything to the vacuum pipe on the back of the clocks I guess that's the mpg part. What do I have to do to stop the buzzing and flashing lights? Oh and blue main beam indicator not lighting up!

Swapped back old clocks no buzz or light flashing but also no oil pressure light when ignition turned on. Have ordered new pressure sensors to see if that helps.

I'm just in the process of trying to debug a problem with no oil pressure light on my clocks too.

First thing to do with either set is check that you have the right voltages at the sensors.

Disconnect the low pressure switch on the side of the head, turn on the ignition, you should have 12v there. If you ground this then the oil pressure light should come on.

The secondary sensor is on the oil filter housing, this should sound the buzzer and light the light if the engine is running at over 1800rpm and the pressure drops below 2.0bar. There is a circuit on the back of the clocks that takes a pulse from the tci to tell if the engine is running at sufficient rpm then uses the secondary oil pressure switch. Mark1_gls and rubjonny have been helping work through it with me. I found this link useful :

Ok well after fitting new senders the problem persists no oil pressure light at ignition on. So swapped to third set of clocks which are pretty knackerd but odometer works and hey presto oil light on ignition goes out when engine started. Ok swap back to original clocks and notice resistor on circuit board broken. Connect back up and get oil light back hurrah. So I'm guessing oil light and buzzer in fancy new clocks from eBay damaged. Will have to take apart and look at circuit for light and buzzer. Does anyone have a circuit diagram for the clocks circuit board?

The circuit that controls the oil light and buzzer is nestled behind the speedometer and looks like this.

It's a bit of a pain to get to, as you have to take most of the clocks apart. You should be able to take the circuit out of one of the other sets of clocks and transfer it into the one you want to keep, and that will probably fix the issues you're having.

Thanks Mike. Will take the roughest set of clocks apart 1st and see what is on the inside. Then go from there. Will keep you all posted. Jay

I don't suppose you got the circuit for it in the end did you? I'm having related problems but don't have any other clocks to swap bits from so would ideally like to mend it.

I haven't stripped mine yet but looking at the photo it's looks like a few resistors and caps, a few diodes, a relay and what looks like a simple logic chip.

So I have this set of clocks from ebay with the fancy mpg calculator vacuum thing on the back. Taking it apart to try and resolve the headlight main beam light not working and the buzzer oil light issue when i notice this socket (white arrow) whats it for? What plugs in there?

its for the 1/2 MFA stalk switch, on later models its on the stalk :)

early models its on the front of the clocks and so no extra 2 pin plug on the back

Ooooo, could i wire it to a remote switch?

well for full functionality you would need 2 buttons. it has the 1/2 select wire which is either earthed for mode 1 or not for mode 2, plus the reset button which you earth for a few seconds to clear the memory for whichever mode its set to :)

Cool, I guess it would be easier to get a later stalk then! But before that need to resolve buzzer, flashing light and no high beam blue led light(despite amber one working on current clocks? wire on circuit printed board?) Clocks in bits at the moment because I saw somewhere using white grease to solve the problem?

bulb may just be blown chap, swap the amber one over :)

its just a normal 12v bulb with a blue or amber cover depending on the age of the clocks

Don't shout at me but I put 9v battery across the terminals this morning on way to work and it lit up blue, so thought it was
a prnted circuit problem?

yeah sounds liek it, or maybe the socket is a bit loose

Ok so I took speedo apart and oiled workings, swapped L shaped circuit board and still buzzer and red light with new board at 2k. And no high beam light still. However swapped clocks for old set with no mfa and no buzz and high beam led works!!! WTH? J

The electrics and electronics in a MK1 are pretty basic but can still cause mega PITAs. Just imagine when current cars festooned with ECUs and even electronics for wipers and brakes etc get old.....

I wonder if it's an earthing thing. Will find clock earth and try to bulk head? J
