fuel pump fuse melting, not blowing

Post

I have read the many threads about fuel pumps, clogged fuel pipes, relays, iffy fuseboxes, etc, but haven't quite found the answer I am looking for.

DX engine, both fuel pumps replaced, fuel pump relay replaced a while back. Done the test by using relay 18 instead, and all OK. Checked current draw at the fusebox with engine cranking and running, the pumps are pulling 6.9 - 7.2 Amps, so well within the expected 5-8 Amp range. But, the fuse (no 5) is getting hot enough to melt the plastic on the blade fuse. No sign of heat damage on the fusebox or under the relay. There must be some resistance somewhere to cause the heating, if the current draw is normal - is my fusebox on the way out?

any advice gratefully received

May not be too bad of a job, (altough as a MK1 newbie I've not yet had occasion to go near my fusebox I speak from experience on other cars) it may just be high resistance at the particular fuse, try getting a very thin emery board and cleaning the relevant pair of contacts in the fusebox, worth a try and will only take a few minutes….

Hi, have been away, so not much progress since. I did try emery cloth, but couldn't force between the fuse contacts - I will see what else I can find that might do the job.

can't do any testing for a few days, as my rocker cover is now soaking in degreaser to try and clear the breather mesh!

Thanks for the suggestions
