Couple of problems, no wipers and high beam always on

Post

Got a couple off electrical problems left on my cabby project. It's a 82
The first problem is high beam is always on when lights are on, can flash them when lights off so stalk works. Sure it's a simply fix. Thought It would be relay but doesn't seem to have one?

The next problem is window wipers don't work at all on any speed. The washer jets work and I tried the relay in my mk2 and it worked so I'm assuming the motor has gone or a wire is not connected somewhere. I've looked under the steering column and the wiring looks good. I can only seem to follow the wiring from both motor and stalk into the main loom. How would use a multimeter to test
Thanks in advance.

high beam is fed from the flasher stalk, it may be the switch inside is stuck on high. the flash switch circuit is separate to dip/main beam select so may be that still.

check you dont have a relay lighting loom fitted in the engine bay

for wipers check you have ignition live between the black/grey and brown wires, the other wires should go live depending what setting its on. may as well strip the wiper linkage down, clean and regrease, if still nothign try the good old mk2/3 wiper motor upgrade. dont forget to chop the plug off the donor :)

Thank for your reply.
I've looked at wipers, if I unplug the connector I get 24v at the black/gray wire connector but none on brown, which is the centre one. With the plug in I get volts at all wires except brown which on the motor side it earth to the motor itself. I assume the brown wire from the plug goes back behind the fusebox somewhere? Didn't have time to remove fusebox and have a proper look. I assume this is the problem and not the motor? Any guidance appreciated.

The lights have got a standard 30, 85, 86, 87 relay fitted at the fusebox. I have replace with 2 others and nothing different. I did notice with the ignition off and the light switch fully on, when i pull the stalk back it flashes with a audible click from the relay. With ignition on and lights off it flashers with no audible click, with lights on and stalk pulled no audible click, however lights do get slightly  brighter when held. No sure if that means anything.
I also took steering wheel off and had a play around but not sure how to tell if it's stuck on high. Again any further assistance appreciated. So I need to remove the metal plate behind the steering. Wheel? Again didn't want to dismantle further and not have time to put back together as is probably forget by tomorrow.

Just re read your post rubjonny. With regards to the wipers did you mean put the positive of multimeter to the black/gray wire and the negative probe on the brown wire?
If so I just tried that and still get 24v.

yeah go across the pins, this checks the ignition and earth wires :) you get 12v right? 24v would be a bit wrong

the relay isnt factory fit so you may want to investigate that a bit further, by the sounds of it it is wired to the main beam and does switch on and off, so make sure whoever installed it hasn't accidentally tapped into a sidelights/dipped feed to trigger it!

the reason the lights get a bit brighter when you hold the flasher switch on is both the dipped and main beam filaments are on together for uber bright :)

for the flasher/beam select switch look at the plug with red/yellow, white/black, yellow and white wires. the black/white is the dip/main power input from the light switch, yellow and white are the power outputs for the dip and main beams respectively. red/yellow is permanent live for the flasher switch.

with the ignition and light switch on 2nd click you should see 12v on the white/black at all times. then you should see 12v on the yellow or white wire, alternating when you toggle the flasher switch. you shouldn't see 12v on both wires unless the flasher stalk is held backwards. if it always shows 12v on both then swap the flasher switch, confusingly its actually in the wiper stalk, the indicator stalk has a little hook on it that clicks into the flasher switch.

Thank your for your continued advice.
The wipers are showing 12v had it set on ac instead of dc volts. So am I correct to assume that's its probably the motor that's gone? I have read a previous thread on putting mk2/3 ones in easily enough.

The lights. I get 12 volt on the black/white wire with the lights on two clicks and on the red/black wire with lights on or off. Also with lights on I get 12v at white wire and flashing doesn't seem to change it to yellow wire and holding the stork still only white wire. Would that more likely indicate a wiring fault or switch fault?
Thank you

yeah does sound like the motor to me, mk2/3 motor is a good upgrade so worst case its still worth doing if it turns out the stalk or wiring is at fault

it'll be the switch if it wont swap between white and yellow :)

Thank you. So to replace the switch I assume I need to replace the stalk? If so is it the the indicator stalk or wiper stalk
Thanks again

Took the stalks off, a lot easier that I thought it would be, and took the switch cover off and gave it a clean and grease and it now works. Now to order a wiper motor.

I've got my stalks off at the moment as I have no beam, if I pull the plug half off/on high beam will stay on, but no response from the stalk, any advise would be much appreciated
