Post

Hi

I am having issues with the brake light my mk1 golf 1981 didnt come with the brake pedal brake trigger switch.. but under the bonnet on the master cylinder there are two switches..

Now do I need to change both switches is that the fault? Also why are there to switches on the cylinder? Also how are they removed so I can replace it?

Thanks I am not that clued on when it comes to the mechanics side but if someone could help me would appreciate it.

Thanks, MOT is this weekend and its just the brake lights which are not working

Ive tried bridging them still no luck.. checked with multimeter there is current running down both switches.

Any advice..

if bridging doesnt help then the problem is the fuse, wiring or the bulbs.

If you dont have 12v on the red/yellow wire check the fuse and wiring from the fusebox to the switches. If you do have 12v bridge the pins on the switches then check for voltage at the rear of the car, its the black/red wire to each cluster. if nothing work your way to the front of the car till you find the problem.

if you do have 12v at the black/red wire then check the bulbs, the trays and the earths

Maybe the last owner convert de switch back inside.
I did cause i had the same problems as you and i used a 25mm master cylinder and than you don't have the option out side !!!!

And otherwise zoom in on this picture to see where the pedal brake trigger is located.

With the fuses have you tested them? They some times look fine and have blow at the top or not seated right, it's happened to me before, give them a turn and wiggle and get a multi meter and check across the top and bottom of the fuse for continuity.

Hi

Thanks mate… rightt il give that another go tommorw butt I have solved the issue partly.. so my mate came round and we thought of many ways to fix it.. so firstly we tested the any voltage coming out the plug which sits in the switch on the master cylinder no voltage was showing which shows there is no current going through the wire/switch.. so ive created a circuit using the battery to give 12v to the brake switch and once i pressed the pedal the brake lights started workingg like a dream … I will make a wire with a fuse in the middle to stop it from blowing out..ive fixed it for now :D but would need to get the brake pedal switch fitted soon… I believe its my wiring if theres no power to the switch??

Thanks hope this helps others too
