aaz into 1.3 glow plug light

Post

hi all I have recently picked up another mk1 project that has a 1.9 td aaz conversion in.

i have a set of diesel clocks in but there is no wiring for the glow plug light.  im also not sure if the glow plugs are working as it is sometimes hard to start

do i need to install all associated wiring as in a mk1 diesel or would there already be some for the engine that i could connect to?

also on the mk3 alternator there is no blue wire connected only the main large wire so not sure what is working on the charging sysem

the light is a simplet thing to wire in you just need to link into the glow plug wiring already there

as for the hard start this could be down to the glowplugs not working, you ideally need to find the large fuse in the enginebay connected to the glowplugs

thanks will try and trace it down.

got a couple of old golf looms so got the wire for the guage and got the mk1 diagram but not sure how they have wired the glow plugs in as i don't have the relay for them in the fuse box

need to add a pin to the clock plug if you want the built in one to work, i think its pin 10 for the glow plug light but if you look close at the blue pcb foil its labelled near the clock plug :)

either that or pin 8, those are the only 2 pins that are unused on petrol clocks

thanks yes i have added the wire in no 10 on the clock connector but not sure what to connect it to as I don't know how the aaz  is wired up.

i can trace the big wire for the glow plugs back in to the fuse box but there is no relay for it?

will get some pics up

for aaz the glow plug relay is a 67/80/167 and goes to slot 2, then you run the fat wire from glow plugs to the large socket N. the mk3 plug will fit once you trim the lock tabs off :) then you need the old wire from ecu pin 50 to g1/3 spliced to d/13 on your fusebox to trigger the relay. this assumes its ce1 blade type fusebox in your mk1 though!

for the glow plug light it comes from ecu pin 48 to G2/5

thanks will try and get hold of the relay
this is the fuse box you can see where the red/black wire from glow plug goes.

the front

only thing is I don't have an ecu

the bay

another problem is the blue wire for the alternator is not connected, not sure where it goes on the flat belt type alt. there is a couple of wires with a black plug on near the alt but nothing on the other end

oops i thought it was a TDI! my bad  the glowplug relay and wiring is all the same as above though.

for the light it comes from the 'auto glow plug period control unit' pin 11. Its supposed to be above the fusebox on the mk3, i think its like a fat double relay looking thing?

there should be a 2 pin plug socket on the alternator, looks like its been smashed off. the alt charge wire is pin D+, the other pin is W and is the rev counter signal for the diesel clocks, goes straight to the fusebox

not so worried about the glow plug light anymore as my oil and battery lights have been damaged so will use petrol clocks.

does the rev counter work from the aaz alt? do i just connect the red/ black wire from D26 to the w on alt?

i think i fixed the alt. i soldered a wire to a connection in it where it broke but could only see 1 place that had an electrical connection but it seemed to connect to the w pin on the plug? are they the same? i now have a battery light but would like rev counter to work

also found i have a 67 relay so hope this is ok for the glow plugs but dont have a control unit. do i need one can i trigger it manually?

you need diesel clocks for the W terminal to work, you can get an adaptor from dakota digital to convert the W signal to a petrol signal or open the petrol clocks up and convert them to accept the W signal:
Gas Tacho / Revcounter Conversion to Diesel W terminal - page 1 - FAQ/Tech Tips/Please Read First - VWDiesel.net The IDI, TDI, and mTDI source.

It must have been the D+ signal you wired up for the battery light, the W signal wouldnt work at all for the battery light

67 relay is ok, but you need a D or TD diesel control unit for it to work properly.

If you can find bits n bobs plus glowplug relay off older mk1/2 diesel lump you can convert it to run like an older engine which wont have the control unit, on those theres a temp sensor hooked straight up to D/13 and the glow plug relay in slot 2 takes care of it all

ah thanks. wired in a button to trigger glow plugs for the moment and added a maxi 50a fuse to the wire so hope this will work for a bit.

the next issue is why i only have 1 speed windscreen wipers?

which speed have you got? does the relay make any clicky noises?

sorted the wipers :)  it was the green wire  to the motor that had been cut.
