I may be wrong but I am sure that you can re tension the spring in the seat belt mechanism. Worth a look before you think about forking any money out.

Also check the plastic cover fitted to the base unit where the seat belts runs through next the the rear seat base, if it's not lined up right the seat belt will catch and will not retract very well. That is if your car is a two door, not sure how the 4 door is as it was 20 years ago when I had a 4 door Mk1.

I found after market belts are never as good as genuine ones. There are plenty of second hand ones on flee bay or even better put a wanted add on here. But I would have a good check over your existing belts before you spend any money.

irishbazmk1  I would put fair money on the fact that they may just need cleaning - it's a common problem when they get dirty over the years.

Pull the belts all the way out and clamp them to make sure they wont retract. Then soak/clean them with either upholstery shampoo or even washing up liquid - anything to remove the dirt.

Leave them pulled out until they're dry and then you should find them much better ;)

Before you spend any money try fully extending the seat belts and spray them with pledge furniture polish to clean the material

the belts arnt sided either, 2nd hand passenger side belts usually much better than driver side. also if you look about for late mk1 cabrio ones they will be newer and straight swap once you also change the inner buckles on the seats for later cab or mk2 golf ones

So I fit a pair of securon belts today and the are now retracting well so I should be good for the MOT next week.

With that said the quality of belts I removed (VW) were far superiour to these after market belts and I would suspect a pair of Mk IV/V belts would have done the job for the same money and would have been better quality.

Ill move on to the next thing for now but time will tell if i stick with these belts, I might keep an ebay on ebay for a cheap set of modern VW belts as that would be the ideal "upgrade" from standard mk1 belts.
