New to coilovers and stretched tyres. ....

Hi…not sure if in the right forum section, but hope someone can help. Just bought my first Mk1  and am just getting use to driving a very low car with stretched tyres and coilovers. Jesus its a hard ride!! Am use to driving low aircooled vehicles but have never experience a ride quite like this. When going over bums the whole car will shudder, the pksdtic dash and rear parcel shelf vibrate s. Is this just something I'm gonna have to get used to? Love the look and stance of the car, that's ey I bought it….but bloody hell it'd hard!

Any advice much appreciated

sounds like the coilies are wound all the way down causing little damper movement; cheaper coilovers?

stretch tryes also take away from ride comfort, something to get used to it you like how it looks, or change.

I had a my mk1 on 13" wellers with a fair bit of stretch on the tyres and my coilovers wound down all the way just to meet the arch. 100-120mm
It was a harsh ride even a road that seemed straight with no potholes felt like I was driving on cobbles.

Everything eventually shook its self loose I.e dash….. Unfortunately if its stance your after and can't afford air ( cheating) then your going to have to live with it.

Thanks for the replies you two….am getting a bit closer to understanding the whole coilover stuff. Have reluctantly put it back up for sale…not sure if I'm gonna be able to get used to it!..and don't want to have to start adjusting ride height and changing the tyres…just more expense and will spoil the look.

Getting comments everywhere I go…lots of admirers and stuff….suppose you can't get comfort and look cool at the same time hey!…and defo can't afford air!

Cheers again…

i personally don't mind the harsh ride, i have a mk4 deisel as well, which rolls around and just feels unsafe, prefer bone breaking stance.

might want to look into strut top extensions; moves the top mount of the coilover higher, allows you to raise the coliover higher to get a better ride.

rolling on 13's P?

coltech classics sells some, for 150.

theres look better than some as well

in the short, it places the top mount of the strut 1.5 inches higher, means that you can unwind the coilover by this distance, keep your current ride hieght but allow the damper and coil not to work under such large compression giving a better ride; in short.

First time I've seen some, I think id rather weld the plate in though rather than bolt it,
Defo have to get some to level out my lower arms

strut tops wont level out the lower arms, the hub position would be unchanged, ball joint extenders and tie rod flipping would be needed for that

my other thoughts would be to cut and reweld the strut, pull up to the height you want; would take longer, but think would feel safer and look factory with a lot of work

a bit like this (large pic, sorry)

Exactly like that yeah. Safest option I think

Think i'll be getting some of those extended top mounts!

Does anyone know somebody who's fitted them and can comment on the ride quality before and after?

there is a few threads on edition38 which have used them before, might be worth a shot firing a PM over to some people on there; or sticking a post on edition in the mk1 section asking about them.
