1.8 20v turbo conversion

Hi

This is my 1981 MK1 GTI i collected last week.

The plan is a back to metal restoration of the shell, keeping the outside mostly standard looking, with chrome bits and bobs, maybe not a standard colour though!
Will most likely put a 20v turbo engine and gearbox in, custom and comfortable interior of some description.

She is in need of a lot of work, pictures to follow so i have started to build a turn over jig today!

An interesting sounding project. Definitely a good idea starting with a roll over jig, makes life so much easier (and it will most likely still be a hard slog   )

Hi guys,
Little update from today, After spending most of the morning sorting out why i had no electricity in my garage i finally got started with removing engine and gear box.
The engine and gearbox are now ready to lift out and i have all the front suspension removed.

I then built up my new engine crane in preparation for the big lift. I couldnt  help having a poke around some area of the car that i have seen people having rot problems this was the result!

Its amazing what waxoyl will cover up, i didnt do any more poking for today.

Cheers Nik

Todays update:

Managed to get the engine out and car up onto the roll over jig.

Is it normal procedure to drop engine gearbox out the bottom of the engine bay? Thats what i ended up doing as it looked easier.

Comes out easier underneath but you can do it either way.

Good progress!!

To days little update,

The rear axle is out and fuel tank drained, i am full of cold and my garage is freezing so didnt do much today.
The hole in the photo below was full of fibre glass.

Oh and found some more fibre glass in the front of the inner wing.

I would seriously weld some diagonal bracing onto your rollover jig, there's a lot of leverage working on those central welds, wouldn't take much imbalance to break.

I'd love to be able to weld like you though

There are a couple of upgrade I will be fitting to the roll over jig before I actually roll it over. I am glad you think my welding is any good, time will tell how good!

Looks solid.

My red MK1 is awaiting engine removal and lifting up on a jig itself, I will be following your thread with interest.

Been a while since my last post, lost a little motivation on the mk1 and due to other things in life not that much has happened, but i am back working hard.

Passenger side floor repair

A little modification required to get lower windscreen repair panel to fit. I will do a test fit of windscreen before fully welding panel in.

Thanks. It is coming along, but didn't need anything like what you are undertaking.
It is interesting to see the work that goes on in threads like this as it makes it all look so simple for when I need to do it 10 years from now!

Another little update from yesterday, this is the metal i cut out from bulkhead where clutch cable passes through.

This is what it looked like after.

More rot chopped out, and start with new bits to rebuild
