My first car & project, Mars red 1.1 1982 mk1 golf C

Post

30,000 miles on clock and 3 past owners

I’m Jake, 18 years old and I bought this as my first car on December the 9th 2013. It’s a mars red 1.1 1982 mk1 golf C, with only 30,000 on the clock! I bought it from someone who intended to fix it up like I’m doing but didn’t have the time to do so; he acquired it from a family who inherited it, which puts me at the 4th person on the log book. This family put it away for 8 years in a not so weather tight barn, ill attach some photos of how it came out. I would imagine the first owner used it to get to the co-op and back with only 30k miles on clock! haha

My aim for the car is to make it completely stock and near perfect without spending a whole load of money on it for the time being (I’m only an apprentice electrician). The only change to the original style of the car will be its ride height, I want to lower it slightly. My plan for the future is to strip it down, do any metal work needed, Buy a full stainless steel exhaust, rebuild the engine and get it sprayed by some point next year around the end of 2015.

So far I have done:

A good well needed clean!
Complete strip down and clean of the carburettor, with new seals
Changed out the dud wiper motor for a mk3's one
Got the fresh air blower working Completely seized up over this winter (2015)
Oil and coolant change
Changing out all old nuts and bolts for nice shiny stainless ones as I go.
New:
-Wiper blades
-Tyres
-Distribution cap & arm
-Condenser
-Spark plugs
-Points
-Timing belt
-Air filter
-Oil filter
-RHD head light
-New back bumper (repo at the moment, until I can fund an original)
-Window winders
-Window winder scraper
-Black waistline trim set
-Fuel hoses & filter
-Sump plug seal
-Fuel cap
-Fuel cap sticker
-Chin spoiler
-Oil pressure switch
-Intake pipe for air filter
-Radiator fan temperature switch
-Dash vents
-Tail gate gas strut
-Pedal rubbers
-Boot seal
And I’ve spayed:
-Wheels
-Rocker cover
-Radiator housing
-Bumper & irons
-Timing belt cover

Some photos of how its looking now (even though the photos don't do it justice, looks better in real life) Not been working on the golf much, been helping my brother on his beetle.

Its currently at a garage having the parts I supplied fitted; new front disks, pads, hoses and drive boots then then new rear drum internals and hoses. Also having them adjust the carb abit as its running a little rich. Once they have done the work there going to MOT it for me, and fingers crossed she will be on the road by Tuesday! :D ill upload photos of the engine bay when I get it back.

No updates on the car, Just been enjoying driving it around. The vw community is so awesome I love it, just on my drive home tonight from work I got waved at by someone in a T3, a scirocco and a golf! :$Heres a engine bay photo (the hardest part to clean by far)

I couldnt resist taking a photo of it in the empty car party after walking back with the shopping
