Mk1 Gti Cabrio

Post

Hello,

So as my Gti Campaign is on life support, sat on my driveway. I had a text from my dad saying that his friend had a black Gti Cabrio, that I may be interested in. So I went to view it, with some haggling I came home with it.

As with my Campaign, I have little knowledge of the mk1 engine etc so expect lots of questions.

58k on the clock although I highly doubt that is true.
Body work; needs a litte tlc bonnet and drivers door. Roof is water tight although looks to have shrunk. The roof pump is also just rattling round in the boot not connected to anything, so it's a manual roof for now.
Interior; again a little tlc. Looks like the steering wheel has been of recently a wire or two hanging from the stalks, although the wipers and indicators work?
Engine, really sweet. Finding it slightly difficult selecting first gear and the brakes could do with an overhaul.

Plans are tidy it up and used it over summer then through the winter have it resprayed.

When I picked it up

MOT time. Passed. One advisory, rear brake line.

After a little clean

The current state of my driveway.

Removed the posts for you buddy

Doesn't look too ad at all, has some potential, pain form the pictures doesn't look too bad with the clean up and the alloys and tyres look in good nick

The things you mentioned don't seem like huge jobs either, any major plans other than a tidy up?

Bringing it to the AGM?

Thanks very much for deleting the other threads not sure what happened there.

It really isn't that bad to be honest. The drivers door is a little worse in the flesh/metal. The bonnet is a little dented and scratched.

What bothers me most is the gear selection, the steering colum stalks and the roof mechanism being non exsistant? ha. At least it is water tight.

Ideally I'd like to get it in a good condition, lower it slightly on polished porsche D90's that I have sat in the garage.

36th Crazyfist, now that is a throw back to my teen years. At the end of August!

Gear wise I replace my entire gear Linkage a few years back, did wonders, however it wasn't cheap as I bought it all from VAG.

For £20-30 quid you can get the main 'golf ball' selector, which I believe sometimes wear, so worth having a look at first under the car to see what it's doing

Its marked as Lever in red on the above

I like it when people get the reference of the name! I've been listening to them for years, I got tickets form when I seen them in 2004 somewhere!

Is it a B plate? If so could explain the pump not connected as I think retro fitting an eleccy roof onto a non eleccy body requires a fair bit of bracketry welding to the body.

That's good info and a good question. I believe it's the original reg. log book is on it's way to me and there is no reg engraved on any of the windows.

Hello!

The Golf is now tax'd, mot'd and insured. Took it for a drive last night and it really does drive/pull well.

The issues I have noticed so far;
Gearlinkage (as noted above)

The dashpod or clocks seem to work when they want.
  • Mph reads about 20mph higher than the actual speed I was driving.
  • Rev counter didn't work
  • Petrol gauge and Temp Gauge did not work
I tapped the dash pod and they started working again, speedo was still in a dream world though. This leads me to believe it could be an earth behind the clocks? Does anyone have a diagram i could use?

Hope someone can help.

Cheers,

Hello! Had a good read of the forum over the weekend and thanks to the forum and especially RubberJonny I have managed to re-earth some poor connections and chase a few wires. Rev counter and petrol gauge are working!

Having a mooch around the engine bay I found a vac pipe going from the bulkhead connected to nothing

I've done a bit of web searching and am none the wiser?

However I did see this nipple here

Now it looks begging to have the vac pipe above on it, however it just seems far too short?

Any help would be fantastic!

Cheers

Hey mate I just asked this same question, the one from the bulk head goes in the bottom, the one from the air box goes in the top, if we have the same setup?

Image the right way up this time! And to be sure, yellow to the airbox

Hey mate, sorry the image is being a pain wont upload the right way around!

Looking at the air inlet manifold, there are two main hoses coming out the front, the one the right has a join in it (you can see this in the image, the white part is the join)

From the right hand side of this there are two pipes, the closest one to the inlet comes to the airbox the one further away from from the inlet goes to the MFA through the bulk head

Also while you're at it, as mine wasn't connected, on the back of the throttle there's another vac pipe which goes the dizzy

Check the lights for the reg as well as they could still be original, mine has one original one at least haha

I was going to link you to that thread too! But I fell asleep…

Well looking at the images 'Michael' put up, my vac lines are all wrong. However the car runs well as it is? I'll have a go tonight and let you know.

Thanks again for the help Simon(?)

I'm not sure what they all do to be honest I just know where they go haha.

I know the one through the bulk head goes to the clocks, which I assume has something to do with pressure dropping warning

Cheers Si.

I followed the above link and the car ran awful. Put it back as it was and it seems fine. O_o

The vac line from/near the distributor, where does that go? It's the only thing missing from the link above.

In other news, took the car for a spin, no battery light or oil light flashing. The fan kicks in when it should and the rev counter, petrol and temp gauge all work!

Did some digging around the dash and found where someone had removed the VDO gauges  :P  and tried to wire in an electric roof. All those wires got ripped out as they looked suspect!

So I thought I'd tackle the gear linkage this evening. I managed to replace the two rods with plastic caps and replace a bush where there wasn't one before!   ;)

Success I thought… But to soon. O_o

I now have no 1st nor second gear?! Please help, what have I done wrong?  :(

The vac line from the distributor goes to back of where the accelerator cable terminates.

Its on your first picture, it goes beneath where the vac hose is sitting on top of the inlet manifold.
