Jez's K reg Clipper

Post

My clipper has been in need of some TLC of late so I thought I'd post some pictures of the mini project and a bit of history..

Supplied in 1992 by Camerons of Perth Scotland, it has a wealth of history. The 1994 VW service records even shows it spent some some time in France !  It was sold to the second owner in1999 and I purchased it in 2002.      When I bought it it had the original steels and grey vinyl roof.

The old grey hood had a small rip so it was given a new mohair blue one. I also tracked down some Rivage wheels as I always thought they suited the clipper body kit.

In 2006 I started using a company car so the golf was retired only coming out in the summer months.  Due to a house move and kids it was unused and SORN for a number of years.

Then in 2013 the tidy up started having been stored in a barn under a cover.

The paint was bit shabby in 2013.. but that would have to wait for another year..

photo 6a_zpsilr8onvu.jpg

So the first thing on the list was to give the interior a good clean

I remember when I first got the car in 2002 I also had the carpet join replaced in leather

:P No change to be found under the carpet just an old pen and AA battery

The service and general tidy up brought it back on the road for the summer of 2013.

While enjoying the good weather a hose split and I managed to blow the head gasket :(    with more work on the house due soon the golf went back into storage.

With the house all done it's spring 2015 and time to crack on with improving the golf.

The aim is to fix the engine and tidy up the paint.  In no way am I looking to create a show car, just something tidy and reliable.

Factory LK5T Inca blue metallic paint to go back on.   I hear this is quite a rare colour  and was only available for a year or two, also to be found on Corrado's around 1991 and 1992.

There was basically no rust on the car what so ever !  just a small bubble on the rear passenger side where the clipper arch meets the bumper.

The head is coming off for a rebuild, cam belt, full service, carb rebuild and anything else that needs doing.

Does anyone know where to buy a dark grey gasket to join the clipper kit to the body?  I've bought new lengths for the side skirts, but having put the rear plastic clipper arches on I'm missing the  curved section that joins the side skirt to the arches.  :(

Thanks in advance Jez

Paint is looking great Jez

I can't help on the gaskets I'm afraid. I'm sure someone was asking about them on here a little while ago - do a search and see what comes up ;)

Thanks he did indeed!  I'll put up some more pics after the weekend.. It should be well on its way by Sunday.

Rear brakes are being rebuilt and head being put back on + braded brake hoses I bought from crazy quiff in 2013 are going on that I never got round to fitting.

Really need a scuttle rain tray.. Anyone got any comments on the South African version heritage sell?

Thanks alps.  I nearly bought a mint green rivage in 2005 it was a stunning car.

In the end i couldn't part with the clipper even though the rivage was a better long term investment.   Guess that's how some cars just get under your skin !

Hi jez

What have you been doing to the paint?

Thanks
Matt

Hi Matt

Gary the mechanic and restorer has rubbed it down, primed, flattened, 2 packed in origional LK5T, nibbed and now due for polish. I think that's the process if I've followed it correctly, but I could have added or missed some steps !

He's done some great paint work on early 911's etc.
