The Holy Grail In Concours Condition

Hi all here is my 82 1.6 GTI, the resto was done by previous owner which took him since 2000!! which obviously shows as it is mint!, not a single non-original part on her and even dealer fitted VDO gauges!! 89000 miles but full engine rebuild, new ancillaries etc… original interior never ripped or torn. The list goes on and on…

Since I have owned her i have changed the steering wheel centre boss to an original GTI embossed cover, added original rear tailgate decal (silver stripe) and original window winders, original window wiper, suspension top caps, repositioned GTI badge just to make it period perfect. Original showroom plates, period tax disc, GTI floor mats

Welcome mate!
Looks like a great car you've got there but can you post some pictures when the car is outside in it's natural surrounding so to speak!

If you look in the 'Newbie' section there's a great 'How To' post pictures using photobucket.com

Might take a few goes to get the hang of it but then after that it's real easy!
And think about becoming a paid member, you get some really great discounts on a whole range of MK1 stuff.  :)

When the warmer weather comes will take so proper pics outside and maybe take her to some local shows, don't want to many miles on her and keep the stone chips off her as currently she has not one stone chip on her so she looks factory fresh!!

Never fancied the 25K one from 4 star then?!

At least yours is staying in this country. A lot of what 4 star sell ends up abroad in private collections never to be seen again.

Good luck with it.

Are you bringing to our AGM?

Yes i've heard that 4 star ships abroad and had a look at the 25k one and there is a massive dent on the roof which has caused ripples and needs some attention, also scratches on the boot lid, the grille is all peeling and it has a non original graphic equalizer, the story is the man who owns it bought it in 83 then drove it for a bit then he moved abroad to work so left it at his parents house in there garage for dust to collect and things to fall on it like what happened to the roof. Don't get me wrong its a nice car it just need a few niggling things sorted and you would think for that money 25k!! it would have been. Also it had original mudflaps with the wolfsburg logo which i would like for mine but searched ebay etc and found nothing, they would just set it off nicely, what do you think??

Personally, I think Wolfsburg mud flaps look more period on a series 1 with "VW" round logo on series 2. Although don't ask me why?!
You don't find the Wolfsburg logo at all on a series 2 gti. On a series 1 its on the steering wheel along with poverty spec series 2's although I'm happy to be corrected.

The 25K car is priced up there due to the low mileage but yea I'd want it dent free for that! - Especially in black. From personal experience I would advise never to buy a black car - oops too late!!

The 25k one has the wolfsburg flaps on it and i saw your car on 5th gear, shame Jason crunched 2nd also he didn't do it justice as it was such a tight course so the diesel won because of more grip and better brakes, annoying that!!

It wouldn't have said a lot for VW if a 40 year old car beat the new one to be fair. Its why there's very few MK1's left on original wheels and suspension I guess.

Its just personal preference on the flaps. I have flaps fitted to the fronts only and they pick up off original holes. I couldn't see an easy way of fitting to the rears without having to drill the spats or arches to hold them on. Those U clamps you get with old mudflaps are pretty useless when you have the plastic arch spats.

I guess ill give them a miss as i ain't drilling into my bodywork, I know what you mean about how VW in 40 years hasn't progressed but it's just a shame it didn't get the credit it deserved if you know what I mean.

Looking through your post you went to Germany and on the autobahns got up to a pretty high speed did't that strain or not feel right in a 32 year old car?? also do you have any stone chips on your body work??

Its done 49,000 which is 7,000 in 6 years of ownership.
I do get guilty putting miles on it but its hard to put it away sometimes.

I took it Holland last summer with the uprated 5th gear in it and it was much better although mines the 1800 and has the torque to be able to handle the taller gear.
TBH it felt stable at high speed on the AB but you wouldn't want to crash it at those sorts of speeds!

I haven't noticed any stone chips. Its done about 4,000 miles since it was painted. Its only a matter of time though. What can you do other than stash it away and never use it and then what's the point in that?!

The beauty of a black car is any small chips do touch in quite easy and are very difficult to spot.

Yes black paint is best for that, I would never store mine away forever but I don't ever want to wet wash it as it's completely sound, rather use it than have a trailer queen!!

Also from when i was younger when the GTI'S were brand new I collected there brochures every year from 1980 when I passed the VW dealer, even got a series 2 GTI brochure with written in OTR from the dealer when my mother enquired about one but ended up with a jetta l !!!

Everything looks tickettyboo and spickanspan but he left shonky looking strut top mounts and didn't even cover them up with the plastic trims?
