6 speed 20v turbo

Hi all newbie here just wanted to share some pictures with you guys see what you think of my little project it's a 1.1 rolling shell as I bought it 5 years ago and have just been able to get on with it after some of the jobs have gone from the workshop so here goes I need to know if anyone has fitted a 6speed Leon Cupra R gearbox in one and what shafts they used as I'm finding it a little hard to see if anyone's done it before on any forums any help and advice would be brilliant more pictures to come as it progresses

Cheers

Hi mate

Firstly thanks for the reply haha

I'm going to go for a berg cup look but fabricate the arches and front valance from a mixture of aluminium and carbon fibre

Full hydraulic pedal box full cage etc

I'll get some more pics up soon

Oh it's also going on a set of compomotive cx500 3 piece split rims

Thanks mate
It's what I do to be honest nothing engine wise will be standard it's having forged rods and Pistons I build exhaust manifolds and systems also inlet manifolds and stuff my Facebook page is yapfab if you wanted to take a look there's lots on there I will upload some more photos tomorrow evening once I've got the bay sorted and seam welded 😁

Hi Yappy, this looks interesting, never seen those mounts on a mk1 before, it's good to see a different approach!!

Cheers mate

It's a bit out of the ordinary but wanted to be a little different

Just don't know if it's a little to far forward in the bay or not but I'm in to deep to change it now haha

I'll get some
More pics up as this is the first thread I've done for one of my projects so I hope I start getting some more views on it soon haha I'm going to post up a pic of one of the cars I've seen on Google and see what you guys think

Cheers again for your kind words mate really appreciate it  C:\fakepath\image.jpg C:\fakepath\image.jpg C:\fakepath\image.jpg C:\fakepath\image.jpg

Couple of things to watch out for at the front. oil filter/cooler hitting the front cross member and being able to pipe up the rad. My engine is further back than yours and it's still tight for the oil filter.

Cheers mate I thought it would be close it doesn't look to be that tight but we will see when I get the cooler and rad in place

Might run the rad in the boot as I need to cut the floor out to repair it and I think I'll be running an external oil cooler so will only be a sandwich plate to fit up front

Again I think I'm a way off that yet hahah

I might even make some new mounts to shift the engine back a bit further but I'm gonna see how it goes first might be fine

Work shall resume tomorrow on it and see what goes on from there

Cheers again for the reply and if anyone else has any more pointers to look out for I'm all ears haha

Cheers

Id be looking at checking the angles of your driveshafts too! If they seem straight enough and line up to your hubs you can look at fitting your rad and intercooler elsewhere if needed.  If theres too much angle you may end up frying CV joints and have to move the engine.  On mine the driveshafts looked pretty kinked when i had my rear epytec mount out by only one hole!

Good to hear your fabricating your own stuff! Like to see how this sort of thing is done!! :)

I notice you have cut into the chassis legs to create the flat areas for the mounts; is that going to make the engine very low in the bay? I only ask because I'm about to raise mine to give more ground clearance for the sump. I guess the inlet manifold is going to limit how high you can get it as it looks quite high at the front.

Mine's a PD130 so nothing at the front to get in the way.

Hi guys

Thanks for the feedback that driveshaft angle is what I'm most worried about I've gotta check see where they line up I've got it on the ramp now so will take some more pictures once I'm down there in the morning but yeah I'm slightly worried the cv's are going to lunch themselves if there's excessive angle on them also I'm running 6 speed and the drive flanges are that much bigger there's not a lot of room for the cv to bolt to the box without hitting the driveshaft gap in the chassis leg  As for the height it's got about 4" from sump to Tarmac
Now I'm not overly fussed about that as I am planning on running a dry sump at some point but if it's problem I'll make the sump shallower and yeah that's the only reason I cut the chassis legs and dropped the mounts in a little

The engine mount is only down 30mm the gearbox is 35mm they need a bit of fine tuning as the engine side is slightly lower than the gearbox side so I'm planning on shaving some off the mount to come up a little and bring them both level again it's only like 3mm out so someone just looking at it wouldn't even notice unless your looking for it

I appreciate your comments and will get some more progress on it next week for now here's how low the sump is  C:\fakepath\image.jpg

Sump level looks about right. They do tend to sit low mate. I second the oil filter and rad touching. Mine is extremely tight.

Looks an exciting project, liking the mounts.

Cheers mate

I think it should be ok but who knows until it's used in anger haha

I will move the filter I think as it is tight so you think the sump level is about right yeah

Should hopefully have shafts and stuff on in the next week or so as soon as I've got them in and working ok I'll get the engine out and start the cage and bring the cage through the bulkhead and string it into the strut towers and onto the chassis legs should make it nice and rigid

Thanks again for your comments guys hope you like it when it's done it's going to be my company demo car (Yapfab)
Take a look on fb if you want my websites not up yet still

Thanks melteddrummer
They didn't look like that when I got them haha glad the sump isn't different height to anyone else's

The wheels will be on a decent profile tyre not silly stretch this things going to be used and abused haha
Once the engine is in the right place with shafts installed I'll be starting the exhaust and inlet manifolds

I'll get some better pics of the wheels tomorrow too
