Back into a GTi after 20 years!

Post

Hi All

Newbie here after buying a GTi today! I won it at auction and it is in really good condition. It's a 83 Y 1.8 Gti in Mars Red. My first car was a 1.6 Black GTi on an X reg and I have lusted after one since selling all those years ago. It shares the same designer (Giugario) as my MAserati 3200 too and will sit nicely in the garage with it :)

I am hoping to bring it to shows once it has has a major detail and overhaul and hope to also meet others in the Berkshire area. Anyone know the car? APH xxY

Welcome to the site.
This was at the car fest auction I assume.

If it is the car I think it is I looked at buying this car about 5 years ago when it had been stood for a while. It was down in kent. At the time the fuel pump wasn't working so it wasn't running. The guy selling it said it had a factory roof but it was a glass roof in it when I got there. he was positive it was factory but it was probably fitted by the dealer. it also had a proper big old lock in the rear quarter by the drivers door for an 80's style burglar alarm.  If i remember correctly it had had a replacement rear panel as well.
I got speaking with the guy through this site that eventually bought it and recommissioned it. It may have gone through a couple of hands since then because I know he was wanting to sell it. i think he was from Wales but Ireland seems rings a bell for some reason

Wales is correct. The car has an extensive history file so will read up on what has been done to it over the years.

Thanks for the info.

Thanks Guys, we had it on the ramp and there are a couple of areas like the spare wheel well and near side sill rusting which will need some attention but other than that is is lovely. I am still amazed I bid and won it considering it sold at Silverstone Auctions in 2012 for nearly double the price I paid!!!!

Looks lovely.. is it too rude to ask what you paid :)

My mate is looking to sell his Standard Red Campaign which has just come out the spray shop last week so wondering what people are paying for these at the moment.

Well let's put it this way I have a stack and I mean stack of invoices and old MOT's for this car, full service history (at VAG until 80k) and specialists since. It has done 100K now.

It sold at Auction in 2012 for £7250 and I paid significantly less than that so I effectively stole it!

Sounds like you got a bargain and a fun fun car to enjoy. Happy days.
