Hello!

Afternoon all,

Newbie here.  Have agreed a deal on an '81 MK1 Gti in Mars Red which I am picking up this Saturday fingers crossed.  It's all pretty untampered with, and I wanted one I could make an original minter, as I've done the whole modified thing with my old MX5.  Is there a way I can find out how it would have left the factory?  I'm a MK1 newbie, so were there different specs, wheels fitted etc, or was it pretty much different colours same spec?  Guidance much appreciated!

Good to meet you all, i'm sure my time here will be long and happy!  I am proper excited for Saturday!

Cheers

Paul

Welcome to the Club Paul.
Yes I can imagine your excited, sleepless nights I bet.

As for yours (to be) there are ways to get a fairly good idea of how it left the factory but I'm not sure if in 81 the spec was different to the UK market as opposed to Germany.

I started selling them in 83 so not the best person for this.
I'll leave that to the many expects we have at this club on such subjects!

Do think about becoming a 'Paid Member' as there would be so many benefits for you in your situation but I will let our Membership Secretary explain all that. Ginner

All the best for the weekend and do post up some pictures when it arrives!

Thanks for the welcome.  I'm buying it 'unseen' as it were (obviously lots of pictures been seen!), but at the price, unless its a total rotbox underneath (could it be, and if so is that common?), it's too good not to take. (Even if I had to break it, which I would only do as a worst case!)

I'm finding my way around, and believe me I will be sharing loads of pictures once it's mine!!

Welcome

Have you seen the http://vwgolfmk1.org.uk/index.php?page=cedi&type=misc&id=54 guide on the homepage?  That will give some good pointers as what to look for with regards to rust and many other things.  Spec wise they'll all be pretty much the same but your best bet would be to post up some pictures and seek advise as to what is and isn't standard and any key things you have queries with.  There is a wealth of knowledge on here so hopefully we can set you off on your project.  Roll on Saturday!

Hi EW,

Yes, given it a good read thanks!  I hope that it's ok, but I can afford repairs given the price i'm paying.  It all looks clean on the body having seen plenty of pics, so fingers crossed!

It all looks standard, but does look to have some BBS alloys on it which I don't think were standard fit?

Hi welcome,  if you look on the home page, there are some links to brochures down the right hand side towards the bottom.

Here is the one for the 81 Golf.

If once you get it you post up plenty of pictures, inside and out I am sure we can all help point out any non standard bits.

Where are you based, might find someone local to cast their eye over once you've got it.

Welcome Paul - looking forward to pics of the MK1.

If the original options sticker is on the rear panel still, or in the owners handbook, you can put all of the option codes in to here - http://igorweb.org/equidec/ - to find out the original spec.

Generally speaking they all came out of the factory pretty much the same, with items like stereos often being dealer fit, not factory.

It's still interesting to find out what all the codes mean though! You can also get a birth certificate from Germany which will list it all out too ;)

Enjoy your time here and thanks for stopping by
