Black Sportline cabby...

Hi all,

Having owned a white 1987 clipper and a black 1992 clipper in my youth, I always dreamed of owning either a Sportline or Rivage that appeared in VW's Golf cabriolet brochures of the time.

Nearly 20 years on and I feel the need to own another Mk1 cabby.  Now that I can afford to insure a GTi, I would love to find either a Sportline or a Rivage.

So, what do you think of my chances of finding a solid Sportline in black for less than the price of my house??  If anyone knows of one up for sale or someone is thinking of selling one then I'd love to know! I'm watching all the usual places, here, eBay, classic and sports, pistonheads, eBay, gumtree etc.

Cheers
Frazer

PS - current daily drive is a T5.1 Transporter which I love and will be staying 😃
PPS - Anyone know if K995HYA is still on the road? Clipper Cabby in black. I sold it in the Southampton area in 1998 and regretted it ever since!

Hi, your old clipper is still taxed and MOT'd according to DVLA SITE, so it's somewhere out there

I haven't seen many black sportlines for sale this year.  If you would be happy with a red one Hairyarse has one for-sale on here at the moment and it's really nice.

Thanks, that's great to know! If anyone on here has my old clipper and wants to sell…???

I did look at that Sportline, but my budget won't go that far unfortunately. It looks like a great car though.
I missed out by 24hours on a red one this week at £2.5k 😞
The search continues…

Shughy might be able to help, he is at the AGM at the minute but runs http://www.golfgtisportline.com website and Sportline register so might know of some for sale
Good luck with your car hunt and hopefully see you at the next AGM.

As it stands just now, a Sportline in good condition is around £5k, anything cheaper will need work done or there is an occasional good buy if your lucky and have plenty time to wait.

Good luck with your hunt.

Hi,
Thanks for the advice so far. I wish I could justify £5k, but as I'll only be keeping it for fun days and summer driving, I just can't spend that much. It does mean a slight project if possible for me though.

I am encouraged that there might be a black one out there for sale though… anyone have any information on that one?

Cheers

Good spot there, but I can't find it yet. Maybe it's because I'm using the mobile phone eBay app which could respond slower?

Go on, break the bad news to me… How much??

That's great. Thanks for sharing that.

It looks like a good well cared for car for sure. What's the chances of me managing to buy it for what I have to spend? I know the answer to that one already but it's still worth a look!!

Keep an eye on it mate you may be in look.

From the picture they're part of the club as they have the badge in the grill, send them a message and tell them you're from the club and your history, they may want it to go to n enthusiast!

I'm not sure on the 25 in black bought into the country, I am trying to find this info out now!

But note it doesn't have the standard wheels (which i guess you know, and aren't hard to find)

And always check the clocks, gear stick and steering wheel because people change them too! Not a huge deal but if you ever want to show it then they're mark down points :)

Looking again it's modified quite a bit actually, not too far, but away from the standard sportline, which may / may not be your thing!

Front Indicators
Front Lights
Rear lights
Trim (looks chrome?)
Exhaust
Speakers in the parcel shelf (this wont let the glass sit flat on the back window?)
The Gear knob and steering wheels as stated

Not to put you off the sale or anything it looks to be in great condition, but I bought a sportline a long time ago, turned out to be on a D plate and a Replica, I still own it as it's my first one and will never let go, but shame it's not a real one - sure does look like it though!

Good advice Si, thanks. I would want to change any car as close to standard as I could, albeit my T5 is lowered, windows blackened, 18" wheels etc 😜 I think VW did such a good job with the design of the MK1 that I'd want it to look original.

There's a lovely original looking one that's come up on eBay at £5k, but he's not desperate to sell and I can't really justify that kind if money on a sunny day car unfortunately. Gutted!
