difference between mk1 1.8 8v and mk2?

Post

Hi all, new member and recently bought an '82 mk1 and absolutely love it. Body work is good just a few touch ups to do. But knew it would need some mechanically and electrically work. It has had a mk2 8v conversion but it seems to be a botched job and it has intermittent starting problems. I took the dashboard off today and the wiring is a mess. I am questioning re-wiring but not sure what the differences are, Im pretty sure the fuse box is difference but what else...Was hoping to just get another mk1 loom but guessing it would not be that easy. Also is there any difference in the 2 engines or are they basically the same just a different k-jet layout.Cheers for any help.Craig

depends what 8v engine it is, if its a k-jet mk2 lump then its basically identical, if its digifant then pretty different (except for very late cabrio these had the same basic engine as digifant mk2)

right, which side is the airbox on? if its passenger side then its running mk1 k-jet so you can just fit any complete mk1 loom with kjet engine loom.

if its driver side then they used the mk2 k-jet, it makes things slightly more complex but nothing hard. you can still use a complete jet mk1 loom but you might have to extend a couple wires on the engine loom to reach :)
