Dashboard Main Beam Light

Hello All!! Remember seeing a post on here a few weeks ago regarding the blue led failure on the dash which in turn is an MOT failure?  :dontknow:

Well about to start some work on my car and thought I'd better check this out. So does anyone know of the led I need to get? Just wondering if its a special part? Suppose the other question is whether or not to change all the dash illumination lamps as sometimes the right hand side needs a gentle fist on the dash to get it to work!  :banghead:

Any suggestions on this? Do you keep original or try and get it a little brighter??? Defo in two minds as I'm trying to keep the car as original as possible with a couple of slight improvements!

Cheers,

Andy

It's not a LED, it's a small bulb the size of a LED with a blue cap over it. The yellow, green and red ones are LEDs though. You can put a LED in but you will have to trace the circuit to change a link to a current limiting resister.

To change the bulb requires the clocks to be split, be extra careful when you do as the plastic circuit boards easily rip and are a pain to repair.

Cheers,
Ade

See below, you can fix with new small white/blue LED keeping the original blue coloured cap

Thanks for the link… I'll get cracking on the car this Sunday… And finally start my build thread…. Which ain't much of a build… Just a smarten up but I know when you start taking bits off where it leads!!! Wish I still had the pictures of my mk1 scirocco restore!!! (wish I still had the car too!!! Seen a project on eBay at the minute for £1995… Just don't have the room for two projects!!!)

if you put an led in get a 12v one, no need for resistor then

hmm it may blow eventually then, possible you're getting away with it as its not used so much. unless its still low voltage output on the main beam socket and a suitable bulb to suit. be hard to test the voltage on the main beam socket i guess
