Hey there :),

I'm new to VW, and even newer to things like cars, but i have read alot about engines, and other stuff, and wanted to ask you guys what do you think, is it possible to somehow raise kw or hp for simple diesel? Because my golf is 1883 with 44 kw, so it's a little bit too weak for me, and i have heard that it's not very good to put in turbo, intercooler and so on in simple diesel, so i wanted to know more about this (if it is possible to do this, and if it's not harmful for my engine, what parts should i buy and replace) because there are not many other ways to improve my engine i think, am i wrong? Because i have also read about chip tunning, but in such an old engine it would be bad as ****, right?

(i know, that there are thousands of threads like this one, but i want to get as much information as possible, so i created one for my self.) Help me to get my red mk1 baby improved!! :))


And please don't say: "you should better buy new one with better eng" NO! it's my present from uncle, so i need to make a beautiful beast from THIS one! :))

Hey,

my '78 1500D makes 50bhp (= 37kw) which is quite enough to keep up with the traffic and even to overtake the odd truck. I use it every day to go to work. If you want a faster one, there are plenty of other engines you can install, but my feeling is that if it isn't broken, don't fix it…

You can't really put a turbo on it. The pistons and head won't be able to handle it.

You can do a gouvner pin mod to it or turn the fuel up but this will mean more smoke!

Best thing to do to a standard diesel engine it just getting it to run as good as possible, timed right with the correct refuelling. Rebuild injectors make a good difference to them

However if you could get hold of a mk2 turbo engine it is a straight swop.

Thanks for information guys, I guess i'll just try to restore it as good as posible, to get the best of it. And what do you think about straight pipe exhaust, is it posible to make, and is it worth it, or it is just for better sound? :)

Also what about parts?(interior exterior and engine also) Are there any good vw golf parts internet shops, or i just need to check ebay's or local markets? :)

A straight through pipe will achieve nothing other than making it sound silly

Hey,

Sorry, that i didn't answered earlier. Now i'm looking for front and rear smaller bumpers, because original ones are very very big, and that's it at the moment, but i just started working on my mk1 so later on i'll find out what i need more.  

And now i'm also interested in swapping engines to 1.6 td, as you said, it's straight swap, so, as i understand, my gearbox and so on will fit that engine? and if i swap it what will i need to replace or put in, i mean filters and so on. Sorry that i'm questioning so much, but as i said, i'm pretty new to it;)

And i wanted to ask about intercooler, i thought to put it in, (if i reaplce my engine ofcourse) to be able to  higher the pressure  of turbo, is it possible, or is it worth it to make? and will it be useful, i mean, will it increase alot of power?

Hi,

I think it looks fine with the bumpers it has got, but each one to his own…

For a swap to the 1.6TD, as far as I know the only difficulty is the downpipe, which you will probably have to make up yourself. Apart from that, a bigger intercooler, etc, will increase power with the pump adjusted, bit will also increase smoke.

Hey,

Yeah, now i thought so as well, that it looks not that bad, because i saw prices of those smaller bumpers, which i thought looks better, and it's about 120 euros.. it's On ebay, so i don't know if i could find those things cheaper to buy.. I guess i'll just try to renew the colour of it, if i won't find anything better, by the way, is the heating way of renewing the plastic is the best way to do it?

I had a fair amount of success with a heat gun:



but they're not perfect. They kind of suit my car, nicknamed 'shake, rattle and hum' which is more and more ratty…

Hey again,

Now i'm wondering, what's wrong with my engine, when i start it up, it's very hard todo it, it works only when pressing gas pedal, because in clear line, going to injector pump from fuel filter (which i had unmounted to check, and it was still clean, so i didn't change it and placed it in again, same as it was before and i filled it with fuel, but not to the top) has alot of air, and because of that my engine stops working, what should i do?

Hi,

you need to bleed the air and to check there are no leaks at all if you want good starting.
The Bosch pump is good at bleeding itself, as long as the battery is man enough to spin the engine fast enough for long enough.

Mine still has the occasional bubble in the clear plastic line, but not enough to worry about (yet)

There's many reasons for air in the pipe. I would check the throttle lever

If when running you wobble the lever if the throttle changes then you have a leak around the shaft

Hey,

I've removed the filter, filled it with fuel to the top, placed it it again and removed the air from fuel filter with that little screw on top and then changed one gasket, from bigger one screw of fuel filter, now it seems to work very fine, thank you for trying to help :)Ervinas.

Hey,

My car's rusty parts has been repaired, and now i'm thinking about interiors sound isolation (maybe it's not useful, i nned advices, i don't quite know). I've found alot of different kind of things to buy, which can decrease sound and vibration and etc. Should i pay my attention to sound decreasing or vibration in mk1 golf or even other things? I need some advices guys:/ . Also when i was disassembling the interiors floori found domw king of wool thing placed below front seats and nothing below back seats, so what should i put in there?

You get a lot of vibration from the diesel engine on tick over I'd have a look at that

Hi,

I'd check on the state of the original carpets and soundproofing. If they are present and in good conditio, they help a lot. Mine is noisy on tickover, but fine to drive - I can certainly listen to the radio fine - and less rattly thn my cabriolet, which has lost its original soundproofing at some point.

I've also tried fillind soundproofing under the carpets (in the cabby) with limited success.
